Disco 4 resurrection.

So after having purchased a 2009 Disco 4 HSE from a member on here at the end of November, on a Friday night in the dark, after using it for a few weeks I’ve got a bit of a list of things to do to bring it back up to what I would class as a good standard.

I’ve already replaced the fuel filter with a Wix (made by Mann) as the one that was on was leaking from the water drain/ sensor seals as it had been over tightened.

Engine oil and filter replaced using a Mann filter and VAG 502 spec 5w40 Shell helix ultra that has a good HTHS level at 3.6.

Wheels refurbished in gloss black with new centre caps and I’ve got some black caps on order for the wheel nuts.

So back to the to do list, it’s need a valet, like it’s never been cleaned in 2.5 years valet! Will task one of the lads with this and see what they bill me!

I’ve got a rear wiper arm and blade to go on as the current one is all corroded.

Both front brake pipe flexi’s need replacing as the ferrules are corroded more than I’m happy with.

It has a little knock on the front so will get some drop links and I will do the lower arms at the same time to bring the handling back in line.

I’ve been looking through the service history and although it had a engine replaced early in it’s life it’s still about 3 years overdue a timing belt! I can’t believe it! For a car that was ran by the original owner for over 10 years with full LR history and a extended warranty for the same period there isn’t a single bill for timing belts.

So it’s going to get a full front timing belt kit as I always change everything and a oil pump from Ford too. The rear belt will be changed and a coolant change done as well.

Let’s see what else I find to do when I’m in there!

And lastly the handbrake needs a strip, clean and adjust, so I know it’s right going forwards.

So timing belt replaced with new tensioner, both idlers crankshaft bolt and aux belt. Rear pump belt and tensioner replaced using all Dayco parts and a LR crank bolt.
Near side rocker cover replaced as it was cracked with new injector seals fitted as well. Cylinder 6 injector took a while to get out as it was locked in by Black Death. A little imagination was needed to get my biggest slide hammer onto it then about 20 mins of pounding the hammer and it started to come. I didn’t think it was going to it took that long. Used VAG 3.0 TDI copper injector seals as they are modified to prevent leaking.
I had to get a new PCV pipe for the rocker covers as the old one was cracked/ brittle so a genuine LR part was sourced.
Both exhaust manifold to EGR cooler pipes were rotted out so that’s been sorted as well.
A/C system regas and a full coolant change performed using VAG G12+ and distilled water. Both front drop links also replaced using Meyle HD so hopefully they last a while.
Replaced the rear wiper arm and blade too.

Pictures are on my other phone at work so will upload Monday most likely.

Still to do are the front lower arms when I get another spare morning, drivers side rear door lock and I think I’m going to change to diff and transfer box oils.

I didn’t bother replacing the oil pump in the end as it’s got the latest version fitted with the engine being from 2012.

M3DPO, yes quite a bit of work but other than finding the time to do it it’s not an issue being a professional spanner monkey.

Moo, here’s a link to the original advert.

Should I have maybe gone up on the Saturday morning rather than he Friday night? Yeah I think it’s fair to say I should have. Would have gotten a different perspective on the vehicle I think.

Here’s the promised photos. Tonight I used the eBay special flushing gun to blast out the heater matrix as the heater was luke warm at best. You can tell it’s cheep but it did the job and now the heater blows nice and hot.

Finally got round to fitting the new drivers side rear door lock today, must be the first job I’ve done on the disco that hasn’t needed more things fixing while I’m in there.

Also adjusted the park brake as it was creaking, I will keep an eye on the rear “drum” to make sure I don’t get any overheating now though as the passenger side did look like it’s been warm before.

Also serviced the AC system just to make sure it is working efficiently.

I’m thinking of buying a super pro bush kit if anyone has any feedback.

Fitted this Tow Trust fixed tow bar last week to use with my Land Rover bike rack.

Came well boxed so the individual bits didn’t rattle against each other and ruin the powder coating.

All fitted with bike rack attachment fitted. Kit doesn’t come with a tow ball but thinking of getting a nato style hitch.

Today I fitted some aluminium rocker covers, the drivers side had split along the corner in the usual place and although the passenger side had been changed less than 10,000 miles ago I wanted to fit a matching set of aluminium ones so that hopefully that’s a job I don’t have to do again.
