I was recently questioning why I had spent so much on a Disco 4 when all of a sudden all was explained
Last night heading home in deep snow on the A627 passing car after car stuck especially BMW's and Mercs I thought what's all the fuss about ?
Just select Snow/gravel and go.
The Disco was unstoppable in the most hazardous of conditions and that's what you pay for.

Word of warning, don't get to confident, whilst they are unstoppable going forwards, they are little different to any other vehicle when it comes to stopping, hit sheet ice and you are in trouble, Last year I slide 100mtrs down hill with a large 4 wheel drive tractor, couldn't do thing except pray.
Glad you like D4 and don't want to be pessimistic, I to love to see these BMW struggling, makes my day . It can when others can't,

I couldn't agree more with the caution on ice . At Christmas in Scotland I had great difficulty getting across slabs of ice on a track - fence to one side , river to the other full of ice floes and a slight camber towards the river for water run off in warmer times.
Reversing just meant more slipping towards the river . I tried everything eg DSC off , TR , high gear starts.
Made me sweat profusely , and eventually I got enough momentum to crawl forwards and through it.
I saw a few years ago a D2 which had slipped off this track held up above the water by a couple of saplings and did not want to join him - it would be a complicated recovery.
Also made me rethink my winter tyres - currently I have Cooper Discoverer STs which are brilliant in mud and fresh snow but even less grip I guess on ice than road biased tyres.
So for my D4 I think a set of proper winter tyres . I guess I have less chance of getting stuck in mud than in ice/snow . Views/advice anyone ?

There's only one type of tyre that will grip on ice and that's one with studs, it just does not matter what tread it is, it is a fact of physics rubber does not grip on ice. And synthetic rubber is far worse than natural rubber. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

BMW drivers haven't got the reputation they've got without good reason, I certainly don't don't want to be one of them regardless of how good the cars claim to be. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,

Steve,
Excellent , once I get the rims I'll get a set.
A friend with a RWD Merc estate had Vredesteins in the snow last winter - I doubt he would have got far on some hills without them.
