Disco 4 economy - strangely good to be honest

Hi, normally posts like this are asking “why am I only get 23 mpg” or how much does it cost to run?

Well in this case (though not concerned - i didnt buy it thinking it was going to do 50mpg!), im wondering if the computer is miles out and thinks its a 1 ltr yaris!!

Around town Im getting 26-28, a steady 40-45 mph on a clear A road its showing about 35- 40 mpg and if left long enough, about 62-65 it eventually shows about 37-38.

Im also visiting the petrol station less often than I was with my ‘08 Freelander Td4.

The Discovery is a MY13 SDV6 with nothing currently bolted on it, normally runs about half full of diesel and on 20” Scorpion Verde All season tyres 35F, 38R. If I put my foot down, its seriously quick too!

It was originally owned by LR and then one private owner who had serviced at LR or LR indys. Its done 77k.

Is it normal its that good? Cant believe Im concerned about being good on fuel, but frankly Im shocked!!

Is that on the dash, it can be wildly optimistic. If you use something like the road trip app then you will get a true picture. The visits aren’t because it’s bigger tank?

No, not down to tank sizes. All the readings are close or in some cases less than my old FL2.

My Dad has a late D4 facelift with the 244 bhp/stop-start engine (not adblue) and on a run to Bristol it showed 44 mpg - but that was down the m6 with most of it on a 50 mph speed limit!

I need to get a app to confirm it, but distance covered wise, the iphone, trip and the onboard satnav all match up tbh

Hi Mk1

As is regularly said, not only Landrovers, take on board computer figures with a very large pinch of salt.

I get about 27 mpg, general driving, mostly local, but not "driving Miss Daisy" if you get my drift. Smile
Best over 5 years is 30.51, worst 20.4, towing 1.5T wobble box gets about 24 mpg.

You don't need any fancy apps or gadgets, basic maths will do the job.

Fill the tank, reset trip meter.
Next fill, take the trip meter reading and divide by litres used,
then multiply by 4.546 = Mpg

eg 400 miles 67 litres

400/67=5.97*4.546 = 27.14 mpg

Hope this helps.

Don't forget that to accurately calculate fuel consumption you need to know how far you have travelled.

The odometer (trip) is unlikely to be accurate, so you will need to calculate a correction factor to apply to the displayed distance to calculate a more accurate figure.

This is quite simple to achieve. Find a decent stretch of road with distance markers in the verge - like many motorways.

Aim to travel 10 miles of so. Before starting to drive your 10 miles or so you should zero your trip-odometer at the marker you have designated as the start of your calibration run.

Drive at a reasonable pace, and try not to swop lanes. Compare your mileage at the end of the you calibration run with the actual distance

The equation to use is:-

Your Mileage
Official Mileage

If your odometer reads 9.60 miles at the end of the odometer calibration distance and the true distance is 10.00 miles, your calibration factor will be 0 .96.

Use this factor to correct distances displayed on your odometer. So if the odometer reads 420 multiply this by 0.96 giving you a corrected mileage of 403.2.

Be careful to ensure that you compare distances against mile markers - on some roads the markers are in kilometres !

Hi NJSS

That's being a bit precise isn't it ?
Good info though, although I personally don't think the trip meter is far out.

If you run a Landrover, I think to the nearest tenth of a mpg is being fussy. Smile Smile

When friends ask me "Why did you get the Disco ?" I reply "because I wanted it, if I'd wanted economy, I would have bought a Smart and driven it like a granny ".

Yes exactly, at the end of the day you are pushing a 2.5 tonne brick shaped object through the air..something has to give, and its usually the bank account!! That said, in theory it will be still running at 20 years old and not wrapped round beans. So thats my eco argument..same stands for my 54 year old series 2a..well thats what im sticking too..the 15mpg on that one I dont like to talk about.

Life is too short for Smart Cars

get a free app called called ROAD TRIP LE on iPhone (I am sure android version is available)

I have been using it since day 1 of my D4 (29th October 2019) so the below figures are real, not JLR dreams.

Since then:

Miles covered: 20601
Average MPG : 29.22
£0.197 per mile

Happy with that.

Don't overlook the fact that the Road Trip app. uses the distance travelled indicated on the (inaccurate) odometer to calculate MPG.

NJSS …… don’t forget to apply a wear rate for the tyres as well, they will alter your correction factor!!!! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter sorry couldn’t resist.

For 99.9% of people the odometer is easily accurate enough, I am more interested in an unexplained difference rather than ultra precise MPG, and therefore indicating a binding brake or other fault developing.

Yes, like I said, I didnt buy it looking for ground breaking economy.

Intresting enough, I had slow puncture (valve) on the Freelander, Whenon Geolanders. I was doing the same trip 3 or 4 times a week. I lost 5-6mpg (when you are only getting 31, thats noticeable) and looking at the tyre pressures, I found it at 20-21 on one of the rears. Sorting it and back up
to normal mpg again. First time Id really took note of the difference it can make. Maybe highlighted more by AT tyres too

My figures are about the same as Pete Hancock's. I'm happy with an overall mpg hovering around 27 or 28.
I do remember that there is a facility using the IID tool to tweak the speedo and/or odometer readings by applying a fiddle factor. I did this on my last D4 but can't remember what FF I applied. It did make a small difference to the odometer but it wasn't that far off anyway.
