Disco 4 - Change belts &, maybe, oil pump ?

I have always been over careful over the maintenance of my cars. I have usually halved the recommended oil & filter change interval & with the D3 did the belts early when I also fitted a new oil pump.

During COVID everything changed. My annual mileage halved & accordingly I haven’t done the half yearly oil & filter change, I’m also getting older - 80 in June! My former annual mileage was c. 12k but I anticipate future mileage may be less than 10k. Bear in mind that I have an MB SL350 which gets used in good weather, when appropriate.

My thoughts have turned now to the oil pump. My D4 was 7 years old a few days ago and has covered only 50k miles.

I anticipate that I will keep it until is has done c. 80k miles, which with all the upheavals may be another 3-4 years.

The LR Maintenance schedule envisages changing belts, tensioners etc. at 112k miles or 7 years - which will be March next year.

The question is should I replace the oil pump on a MY2016 D4 when doing the belts?

I have had conflicting advice. Some say for the smallish incremental cost & peace of mind it’s worth doing. Others say it’s unnecessary on a D4 & a waste of money.

I ask this now as I am contemplating bringing the belt change forward to sometime later this year.

Thoughts please

IMHO it’s a waste of time and money on your D4 with such low miles, but if it give you piece of mind and moneys no problem why not?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

That looks like ManMaths Exclamation Laughing

Dont think its needed to be done but if plan on keeping it for a few more years, how much extra is the pump and if it would give you peace of mind ?

I would opt for unnecessary with that milage. As the oil and filter have been changed regularly the pump will be good. ( but I'm also a tight ----)

The advice I was given at the dealer was that the oil pump was upgraded for the D4. The D3 was a must with the belts and it’s totally unnecessary with the D4….. I was up for doing it though… then I found out the price and didn’t!

Mine is 2014 and I’m at 88k, (80k when the belts were done last year)…..at 50k on a 2016 I really think you’ll be fine. Especially as you do the half year oil change (did mine this weekend)!

I appreciate preventative maintenance but decided against this one.
A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

Had my 2014 D4 Commercial Belts done at 4 years old 112000 miles by a trusted local indi, I asked whether the oil pump should be changed at the same time due to wear. he said it really wasn't necessary. That was 4 years ago and still going strong although now owned by a friend.
