Having recently moved from a D4 3.0 to a L405 FFRR 4.4, provided that it’s driven at similar speeds, then the FF is only around 0.5 of an mpg worse (over around 5,000 miles of testing, not using the on board computer). Use all of the performance however (which is astonishing!) and it drops alarmingly Rolling Eyes

Not sure how different the fuel consumption is when a very similar engine is fitted to the L322 though.

Lots and lots of really sound, unbiased, advice on this thread Thumbs Up

That new FFRR looks amazing!, sadly they’re rather out of my price range but what a car.
With the D4s I could be able to get a post 2012 one but it looks like it would be an XS and not an HSE, is there a huge amount of difference between them as the XS’s I’ve seen on Autotrader all seem to have leather, sat nav etc.
One thing I always really liked on the RR Sport was the heated front screen, do they still come with that?.

Thanks Bill Thumbs Up It’s currently loaded to the gills and we’re on our way to Wales, right up on the moors, for a week & back in time for Christmas Very Happy

When we ran our D4’s, they were HSE / HSE Lux’s and the biggest differences for us were the sunroof (Marmite, but we wouldn’t be without) and the leather is much softer, but still hard wearing.

Nowt wrong with an XS though Thumbs Up

You’ve definitely got the right car for a trip to rural Wales!.
It seems you can get a post 2012 HSE if budget is slightly stretched but might have a look at an XS as well, one mistake I made when I bought the RR Sport was buying an SE, the leather wasn’t as nice as the HSE at all, but I’m comparing with he early ones, if there’s a good D4 XS I’d go for one, don’t really want a GS though.

True, Wales is the perfect playground for 4wd, I was up there a few weeks back had a great time! Thumbs Up

My tuppence - go for a HSE, otherwise you'll probably find yourself forever thinking 'it's nice, but would have preferred a HSE', and also it'll probably hold it's value slightly better too.

Ideally I wanted a HSE when searching for our D4 nearly 4 years ago, but just couldn’t justify the extra cost, so settled on an XS (2010).

It had the leather I wanted and although it is of a lower quality compared to the HSE, it was still much better than that of the Honda Accord it replaced. It also had most of the other things I wanted such as Sat Nav and more bits when compared to the GS, such as the bigger screen due to the Sat Nav.

Thanks to this great forum I also discovered certain functionality could be enabled on the XS, such as timed climate, 4x4 info and some other bits.

So all in all, I am very pleased with my XS, which has just passed 100,000 miles, even if it has just cost me almost £1,000 to fix the electronic handbrake and is likely to cost a further £2,000 or more in the coming weeks. But, I can just about forgive it, as it is the only car I have driven which really makes me smile and that I really enjoy.

Well I’ve not managed to compare a D4 to a FFRR as yet but I have compared a D4 to a 2013 Landcruiser just to make sure, and the interior of the D4 is SO much nicer it’s not even close, the engine is much smoother, quieter and responsive and it holds the road and feels nicer to drive too, I was really impressed with the D4.

Can’t really comment on the Land Cruiser as I have never had one.
I had an FFRR L322 4.2 supercharged Vogue SE before my current D4 XS and I prefer my current D4. The load carrying ability of the D4 is 25% more than the FFRR, and it is more usable with a flat load bed. I prefer the seats in my D4 but miss the electric headrest. I also missed the xenon headlights and heated steering wheel but have now retro fitted these to my D4 and couldn’t be happier.
If you do go for a D4 XS make sure it has xenon headlights (check the labels on top of the lights with the bonnet up), alternatively budget for a headlight change as the halogen headlights perform really poorly.

I’m going to look at a 4.4 FFRR at the weekend so will know more after that, they do look better value than a 2012 or later D4, but to be fair it will have to be something really special for me to prefer it over the D4 I test drove, looking at the prices I might stretch a bit extra and go for an HSE.

I love the FFRR, but the smaller boot and lack of flat folding rear seats is too much of a compromise for me when I can have a D4. Thumbs Up

United Kingdom 2015 LR4 3.0 SDV6 Commercial XS Auto Corris GreyLR4

Billclay,

I own a FFRR and wifey has an 8sp D4. Its a very personal thing! I personally wouldn’t want to be without my FF & wifey couldn’t swap hers for mine!

I love the flexibility of the D4 and i drive hers as much as mine, carrying the kids & dog with ease and a fair bit of luxury, hers is a 15.5my XS with a boat load of extra's BUT! Given a trip across country i would always choose the FFRR's waft, turn of pace and shore footedness over the D4! So, i guess its down to what you use the car for? What & how much you carry? And what you personally want from your car ordinarily...

I hope that has helped Thumbs Up

@billclay: Really interested to hear how you get on. If it’s a choice between a D4 and a FFRR, then it has to be the V8 FF Very Happy They are both great cars and there’s no right or wrong answer, it just depends what you like Thumbs Up

I fell for my original D4 immediately, the FF took longer, so give it a good go and make you you get an opportunity to properly try out the straight line acceleration - 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds, in a car weighing 2.5 tonnes, is insane, especially when there’s so much grip that it just doesn’t matter if the surface is cold/wet/a bit rubbish! The FF’s naff all use if you want to move house though! Rolling Eyes
