If the steering lock fails(slow or sticks) an unknown number of times(2/3?) the complete system locks out, BMW claim it is for security, they do not sell the lock on its own as it is riveted onto the steering column and that costs £1200+ without fitting or being programmed to the system, when the Car Access System module throws a fault it cannot be reset it is a one shot format and has to be pre-programmed by rip off BMW for £500 who will not supply one without seeing the V5 reg document.
I can’t find a diagnostic tool for a BMW Mini that will reset the CAS counter on the steering lock without going into the super league of cost.Banging Head Banging Head

Would this be of any use to u, lists some diagnostic readers , this one around £250.00

Whoah ! Interesting as I want to buy an older 911 at some point, but have done no homework.

Is there an IID equivalent that may do the job ?

GPS uses a 10-bit date format that rolls over every 19-and-a-bit years. Later kit had this coded in and allowed for it resetting to zero as a valid function, but older kit can't cope with that - unless there's a firmware patch (note not all kit will have been built to accept patching).

Next time this creates a problem is early October 2038.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

The third GPS week rollover will occur 20 November 2038.

Before that happens we’ve got plenty of other excitement - the original Unix epoch (seconds since 00:00:00 1.1.1970) will roll over early January 2038. Thumbs Up Of course, most systems nowadays handle time as a 64 bit wide variable but there are implementations that still use 32 bits. Whistle

The C/A (civilian) legacy navigation (LNAV) message contains a week number (WN), a counter, which is represented by a 10 bits wide field. This is what what rolls over every 19.6 years or so.

The LNAV message format is in appendix IV here, https://www.gps.gov/technical/icwg/IS-GPS-200H.pdf#page208 Thumbs Up

Got rid of my 996 C4 convertible in 2019 only because the daily (BMW) destroyed its engine. N47 chain snapped.

Liked the 911 but not as much as my Boxster so the 911 went. Annoyingly just after the 944 went too. Don’t recall having the date problem at all on mine, or on the Boxster. I did buy an updated nav disc off eBay for about £20 I think. They are all great cars, in fact all 3 I currently have are and having the disco 3 means I have a multiple of easily broken vehicles. Must be a glutton for punishment.

I’d certainly have another 996, or 997. The engine problems are mainly caused by people not letting the engine warm up first before thrashing them, by not trashing them, and by putting the engine under strain by driving to slowly in too higher gear.

Join your local TIPEC group for lots of good banter and events. Porsche ownership is loads of fun. Can’t say my 2000 Boxster has let me down at all in 4 years.

I have to say that I have always been tempted by a 993, but I concur with what has been said about Boxsters & would add that the Cayman is well worth a look.

I'm thinking of buying a Boxster, they seem to be a lot of car for reasonable money. Any top tips on buying... apart from IMS bearing failures ?

Thx

Top tip is join www.Boxa.net and download or read the buyers guide on there. It is excellent and the best guide out there by a million miles.

2.7 is what I have and I have never found it lacking in power, although others love the 3.2. It has very good running costs too and you can get pretty good (near 40) mpg.

2.5 prices increasing. 3.2 is more expensive. For first one read up and do all the checks and ask all the right questions. Buying off a forum owner may save you a fortune.

Things to be aware of. Keys are expensive to replace/code - like a D3.
AC rads and Radiators get dirt and dust trapped and will rot. Cheap to fix just take the front bumper off and change or clean them.
Door speakers are good to have and difficult to retro fit.
There are some really good video buyers and owners guides - including one in French with subtitles that is also very useful.

The most important thing with them is getting the tracking done, preferably by a place using Hunter equip. In the wet they can be handful is the tracking is out and it will ruin the experience.

£5k will get you an absolute charmer like mine probably at around 2000 - 2003 model year with between 75 - 125,000 miles. Recent history is important, if not more than FSH.

Hope this helps

The other thing to remember is that you can’t use a hammer as often on a Porsche, I’ve just replaced most of the suspension arms on my 996 and the temptation to free everything off with a few swift blows was strong, this would have resulted in the aluminium subframes being toast though!

They are superb bits of kit, I have a 2001 C4.

Just done a complete suspension refresh on it, every single arm, bush, track rods, dampers, top mounts, bump stops, the lot, and PS4 all round and a fast road geo set up.

Just so analogue feeling but still so useable too.

Censored to work on though, that combo of steel and alu mixed together along with 20 years of UK weather makes thing ...... tricky.

Worth it though.
