I paid £4.9k for my 57 plate SE almost two years ago, and its probably worth similar money going on the asking prices on Autotrader at the moment. The way I figure it is that if it costs me a couple of grand each year (ex fuel) to keep on the road then thats fine.

My wife has a S Max that cost £14k 5 years ago, its probably worth about £5k on a really good day, but needs a cambelt / water pump doing this year, and eats a front set of tyres every 14k.

Overall I reckon the S max has cost us far more each year (including depreciation) than the LR, plus it has left us stranded twice.

Sometimes it can be better the devil you know, sometimes there are lots of hidden costs that owners forget about.

It always used to be the case that cars with a separate chassis were not MOT failures due to rusty sills. Does anybody know why this has changed?

Probably because the seat or seat belt anchorage is within 30cm of the rot:-

(a) The strength or continuity of the load bearing structure within 30cm of any seat belt anchorage (a ’prescribed area’):

(i) is significantly reduced or inadequately repaired Major
(ii) anchorage likely to become detached in the event of a collision Dangerous

Also if within 30cm of the mounting of the body to the chassis

well its going to be repaired, decided with all we have spent on the car its too much to let it go so cheap (4k in 5 years), little bit of Embarassed aswell, my brother inlaw is a welder and id forgotten Embarassed , hes going to sort the welding for me.

I know it too well. It was tough even when she drove her last in a remote place, luckily pure costs made the decision for me. Cured now though. Thumbs Up

so ive removed the tubes and the sills are in good condition, it was the brackets they were rotten,i cut through the brackets with a grinder as the bolts wouldnt come out, just need to source the fitting kit and some clips for the plastic side trims, time to get warm in a hot bath, not the best weather for fixing cars Thumbs Up
