Disco 3 Manual gearbox loose and sloppy gear lever
hi everyone - advice please...
Our D3 manual has an extremely loose gearlever....
Actual changes are fine - another forum user described his gearchange as like a rifle bolt and I know what he means, but the lever wobbles about and doesn't seem to locate opposite 3rd, or 1st, or wherever.
The reverse detent circlip is new, so it isn't that.
On an old classic Rangey or similar I'd be looking at the locating springs underneath the lever, but I suspect the Disco doesn't have those...
Suggestions welcome ! Has something broken? Or is it just wear - she's done 150k...
Thanks
Chris

Sorry,I really don't mean to patronise you but are you sure the detent spring is correctly installed if it's not broken? What you are describing sounds like detent spring failure...-------------------------------------------------------------------

hi, no problem, thanks for the response...
I fitted a new circlip last week as I suspected that was the problem. The old one was worn - the 'lugs' were rounded off and worn - but it was intact. Fitting the new one has improved the actual selection of the gears slightly - it slots home nicely...but..... the stick wobbles about, its really loose.
Looking underneath the gaiter just reveals a rubber gasket , and I can't see how to remove that to look beneath. (On my old Disco 300tdi the gasket was pop - rivetted into place, you could remove it to access the top of the gearbox, then rivet it back in!)
Any suggestions welcome!
Chris

It is clear that it is not good, the manual box in good condition does not behave like this. My question is, did you find this suddenly or did you notice it more and more?lost in translation!

It's not the manual box, the box is fine.
It's something to do with the stick to box linkage because mines exactly the same.
Even when the car is firmly in gear, the stick still has some sort of side to side play.
Not a clue what the issue is despite my own car having been like this since I got it near on 6 years ago and not getting any worse.
I was going to wait to see if a solution was forth coming before joining the thread but it's only right to point out that in blaming the gearbox, you clearly don't have the same symptom on your own car, or possibly even have a manual D3. Mods:

Two places to check. The clip that is on the right side of the diagram.
Or the pin that holds the linkage to the gearbox.
Failing that there is a plastic ball at the bottom of the gear stick that maybe worn and need replacing.
Can't think of anything else that would make the stick floppy.

Thanks everyone for your responses.... and its nice to hear I'm not the only one.
We've just bought the D3 so I can't say how long its been this way. I noticed it, obviously, on test, and assumed 'The Circlip' would be the reason ....
Question for Brightyuk - the drawing explains a lot - thank you. Would you happen to know if I can access the bottom of the gearlever and the linkages from inside the vehicle?
Thanks again everyone

You won't be able to do the pin at the front if that is the problem the gear box will have to be lowered for that. if you get underneath the vehicle (make sure use axle stands) have a look at the right hand side of the gearbox at the top the pin may have worked it way loose.
I think off the top of my head you should be able to see the clip on the right hand side. Careful lift the bottom of the gater the plastic bits has lugs all around. Then remove the lift the noise insulation you should be able to see it then.

I had the rear circlip fall off just after I bought my D3 - going up through the gears it suddenly went floppy. I fixed it at the roadside with an AA guy after taking out the console, etc. It was all accessible from above and takes less than an hour. I fitted a new circlip the following day and certainly noticed an improvement in the accuracy of the gear lever.

I replaced the front clip on mine.
You need to remove the large metal part no 7222 in the above diagram, the front two larger fixings are tight to turn. A new clip comes with new o rings and grease. I think if the clip had come off, the pin it holds would come out almost at the same time. However i guess the o rings could have perrished leading to a bit of sloppiness

Done circlip, made no difference so watching to see what the fix is.......

Ive just looked at mine for the same problem, got a inspection camera and had a look. The rear joint at the bottom of the lever is good but i can see a fair bit of play in the front one, although i think the clip is still there. Could it just need new o-rings in it or would you think i need a new clip as well?
Thanks

One of the common faults is the white plastic "basket" below the gearstick. The first picture in this thread might help: https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/gear-stick-...62048.html
Not sure if it's available as a replaceable part but worth finding out as it's been the cause of many sloppy gear sticks. Mods:
