Disastrous Wheel Change
Well with the Tong weekend here its time to change wheels from the Wranglers to the Maxxis Bighorns.
The new jack arrived today, so changing the wheels should be no problem - right
1st wheel............this happened to the LR wheelbrace
Second wheel…..this happened to my socket
Ok, pretty off at this point but had a spare 22mm socket so kept on going.
2 MTRs are now fitted, both on the nearside.
Right, third wheel……and this happened to the socket for the locker
so there we go, nearside is MTRs, offside is Wranglers and because I have no locking wheel nut socket, I am right royally SCREWED.
I had the pads replaced a month ago so I’m assuming that the studs were massively over torqued – I’ll take it back on Saturday morning to but if the garage - LR Supermarket (independent) hasn’t got the correct locking wheel nut socket then that’ll be me up poo creek

your local dealer might well have the correct lettered locker on their shelf if you want to avoid a complete wipeout
Oh, and never use the LR supplied jack, it is not fit for purpose, if your changing wheels yourself get a decent trolley jack I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Go to a dealer, I think they carry all the lock keys. They might charge a little, but it gets you out of a hole.
Oh, and ditch the locking wheel nuts. Fit normal nuts in place. Best get to Halfords and buy a decent breaker bar and socket to keep in the car also

I'd read that - so bought a new one - obviously the wheel brace is gash as well
I think your right - I'll go to the LR service centre as first port of call, and I suppose there's always LR assist - they must carry a full set of lock keys

Halfords Pro Range lifetime Warantee on Breaker Bars at present get a Sealy 22mm Sleaved socket
As Gareth said ditch the lockers, more trouble than they are worth.
I use a 2' breaker bar and a deep hex socket, not a multi point.

Owning a mobile tyre fitting firm, we come across this everyday thats why we tourque by hand. First thing i done when i bought my new disco was take the lockers off and put in bin. the keys are to soft. All tyre dealers are airgun happy. gives a bad name to the few good ones.

When I called out LR assist because I had mislaid my locking wheel nut key, I obiously told the operator that the only problem was the lack of the locking wheel nut key. To my surprise the guy turned up and said that they don't carry them!!!nil admirari

All Sorted now -
went to the liverpool LR service centre - changed the wheels for nowt (140 N by hand!!) and even threw in replacement key - cheers Steve!
I think I'll take your advice though - I've ordered a set of four standard studs to replace the lockers.
Got a replacement 22mm socket and 19" breaker bar from Halfrauds - only problem is the bar is 3/4", so waiting for a reducer
No weetabix though - its Special K so I'll fit into that red swim suit

Last time I used a tyre dealer, I told him the lb/ft torque required. He got the hint and went to find the torque wrench. Took him a while, and he had to dust it off.... Andrew

If the nuts were on that tight I’d be looking at replacing the nuts (all of them) at the very least might even change the hub studs just depends on how tight they were on

This dodgy LR jack really bothers me
I've a decent trolley jack for wheel changing at home, but how about on the road punctures ?
Can't very well have a trolley jack in the boot all the time. Any recommendations for a decent jack, for "on the road" wheel changing ??
Can a bottle jack be used with an air suspension D3 ?
