This sounds daft but what am I supposed to be looking for when measuring the oil in the sump. The 'dip stick' has 4 red marker points. However they all appear to be covered by the same small amount of bubbly oil and I get the impression this may have been smeared on by the process of dipping it.
Most dips sticks give a clear indication of the oil level but not the one in my LR3.
I have added oil recently and it seemed to make no difference to the bubbly oil reading !
I start to wonder is there no oil in it at all but I dont want to overfill it .

Andy, not daft at all as the D3 dip stick is difficult to read.
Checking the oil should be done cold, usually in the morning before start up and on level ground. The D3 is very difficult to read accurately because of the little plastic orange bits and that the oil should be nice and clear.
The best way is to remove the dipstick and wipe it on a clean white paper towel.
Replace the stick and then withdraw it again. This time lie it on another clean paper towel and you will see the oil stain when you remove the stick.
The oil mark should be just below the top plastic marker if you align the stick with the mark, certainly not above it.

Pelyma, yes the light should come on, but knowing LR electrics, dont bank on it. We will expect you at Billing.

I would agree with Andy in that the dipstick does not lend itself to be read in the traditional manner. I have done as I have always done and that is dip the oil in the morning before start up. Yep the whole "scale" of plastic markers (yellow I beg to differ) are covered in the same amount of oil. After many attempts one can be forgiven for taking an educated guess.
Please don't wait for the oil light to come on as it seems from the members of the forum that relying on Land Rovers technitians to be consistant is risky.

Mines orange and I find it easy to tell how much oil there is, every time I check it (weekly) it's right in the middle of the markers. As the top one has a downward max arrow and the bottom one an upward min arrow I guess mine's just right The End

Please don't wait for the light to come on! The light is too late!
Also it does not take much oil to go from nearly at the bottom, to the top of the dipstick. Add 1/2 litre at a time.
BN, is your oil clear??? mine was black as tar after not many miles. Since the service its clear, but starting to go black already (250 miles)

Gareth, yes my oil is quite clear, but then I don't change to 'sand' mode and gone from the traffic lights like a racing dervish. I'm gentle with the D3 so I can see my orange balls. Si, I hadn't even noticed the arrows for up and down. Mines due for a service soon, 3 months old now.
The thing is, I haven't even used the D3 for the purpose I purchased it for yet, because I love it.
On a serious note, never let the oil light come on as the sump is basically the Jaguar one, which is in fact not the best for off roading. That is why the D3 has a recomended angle of lean which is actually far less than it can do in reality. Oil above the angle of lean starves the main bearings.

BN, please don't get the idea that I am a boy racer, I would not be driving a Disco if I was , but I do a lot of motorway driving at 70-85 mph. I thought that all diesels would black their oil quickly.
BTW I have orange balls with arrows on also. I also have an extra ball halfway up my dipstick, should I be worried
