Diesel quality
In South africa our diesel which is common is 0.05 mass (500ppm) sulphur content. I believe this is the maximum ppm allowed then we get one which is on the lower end which is 0.05 (50ppm) and then we get a synthetic diesel which is 0.01(10ppm).The problem is you only change the engine oil every 20000km if you are using the higher end ppm diesel your engine could suffer from the sulphur. I use only the synthetic unless I cant get it and the engine oil seem to stay clean. What is the sulphur content of your diesels in your countries.Discovery 3SE tdv6

Why would you only change your oil every 20 000 - the service interval is 12 000 km in SA

I was told my first service is at 24000 km and when you informed me it was 12000km I then checked and it is now 24000km but I think I will do oil change at 11000 km.Discovery 3SE tdv6

Most of the domentation ie manuals etc state that the service intervals are 20 000 - but for the D3 locally it has been reduced to every 12 000 km or 6 months - whichever comes first . Be careful LRSA is full of sh t if you exceed these .

The 2007/8 TDV6's now have a 24,000Km / 12 Month service interval locally (saw it on the board @ McCarthys) . If I remember correctly the manual advises use of fuel with a sulfur content lower than 3000ppm (0.3%). For fuel with a higher sulfur content more frequent oil changes are advised.

Interesting - I know the 2007 onwards models have a different fuel filter , but other than that don't know of any other changes. Not sure how a fuel filter can double the service interval . FWIW I service my car at LR Midrand (also a McCarthy dealer and they insisted that ALL D3 service intervals where still 12 000 or 6 months regardless of model )
