Just driving down the road a bit earlier and had my passenger window shatter with an enormous bang. Glass everywhere. Fortunately no one in the passenger seat but I had small fragments over me and lots of glass in the front and some in the back.
Been onto the insurance and no problems but I have to wait to get OEM glass to replace through Autoglass. Turned down the offer of their own version!
Now need to spend a couple of hours clearing all the glass out carefully and then to secure the window. There goes the day...
No apparent reason, no impact or anything, only possibility is that the temperature difference between frost outside and heater on inside may have caused a stress fracture. I did speak to LRA but were frankly not very helpful or interested - just told me to speak to insurer.
Anyone else had a similar issue as this will cost me a small excess and I can see some of the paintwork seems scratched as some glass fell out rather than in.

Yes, rear screen went on my old D3.
Similar situation - cold morning, cleared my widows and had defrost settings on, pulled out of my drive and as slowed for the junction down the road had this big bang.
Initial thought was that someone ran into me, but upon checking the rearview mirror I saw I didn't have a rear screen.
Usual insurance excess and it was sorted the dame or next day.

This must be rare as it shouldn't occur with the amount of layers the windows have these days.
Are the windows still ice covered at the time?
I guess no timed climate was used either?
I think maybe timed climate could have helped by slowly warming the windows before moving off, and failing that they must have been faulty ones... FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner
Test piloted a new D4 XS SDV6.. Gone and being forgotten i hope!!

Can't imagine it's the difference in temp between internal & external unless their's an underlying problem, and we don't get it cold!! Windows would be going pop left, right & centre in N USA, Canada and Scandinavia in winter. Had mine in -20c with thick frost & ice and blowers on full pelt, never a problem. It would have gone bang cause it was faulty and under stress from manufacture.

I've seen this happen many times as a glazier, its called an "Inclusion" in the toughened glass, which is usually a minute air bubble or gas pocket, can remain dormant for ages then the right change in temperature can cause it to fracture .....Hope you get it sorted without much hassle...

It is usual that under the glass section of a motor insurance policy, it will also meet the cost of repair to any scratched paintwork which was caused by the falling glass. No extra excess and not usually considered as a claim for no claims bonus purposes.

I had the rear window on my BMW blow out a few years ago for no apparent reason, it was in winter but not especially cold at the time. It certainly wakes you up on a morning when it goes Cheers Ian

There had to be something wrong with the glass.
Not a mission would temp difference cause this as previously said.

Thanks for the heads up on the paint damage, I will check the policy.
And I agree, there must have been something wrong with the glass, some kind of weakness but impossible to prove I guess.
Car is now glass free after about 2hrs vacuuming, brushing off with a clean paintbrush and a stiff carpet brush. Those toughened shards go everywhere. Interior is cleaner than it has been for quite a while!
Glass being fitted Thurs. Gave up on getting LR OEM as it would be into next week and I confirmed with local Autoglass guy that they will order the solar/optikool glass. Would otherwise have got bog standard if I hadn't asked.
