Should I desert or stay within the D3 fold, a tempting offer |
|
So I have 58 Reg MY09 HSE with 91k on it, it has been regularly serviced and has had many preventative jobs done. Last MOT was fine, strangely mentioning rust!! when it was just some surface rust on the rear chassis as we have all come to expect, easily cured.
I have been thinking of changing and have seen a VW Touareg V6 3.0 2015 (64 Reg) with a little over 9k on it, the question is should I stay or go. The D3 been good tows the 2000+KG trailer I need to tow with ease, the VW would also do it as well.
WBAC say mine is worth £8,405, is this realistic?
Is the VW any good or should I stay true to the D3?
Sure there are views out there, would welcome them......

The Touareg has a significantly smaller cabin and trunk. It barely fits 2 adults on the 2nd row. Like all VAG cars it has hard seats - some people like them, some people don’t. It’s not a bad vehicle but I was put off by how small the interior really is. The diesels do have plenty of torque.

Cabin space is not a major issue as usually only me in it. Trips away then have SWMBO, faithful hound and luggage, will need to check seat comfort, hopefully seeing it tomorrow. The towing capability is the all important aspect.
May consider a D4 but about £8-10k more, lots to ponder over

I sold my D3 and upgraded to the D4 , I have had many different cars towing our caravans around Europe, the D4 being automatic compared to my manual D3 is a dream, but the D3 did me so proud sold her at 160,000 miles after seven years of ownership longest and best car I have owned , but it’s your choice and after all if you move and don’t like you can always come back good look with your decision

The vag 3.0 tdi engine is a really good lump, does not snap cranks! 245 bhp rings a bell?
Wife is on her third one, not a toerag but all quattro saloons A4/6
She likes them, I think they are like go-carts, hard and unforgiving.
Only important bit is to change the oil a lot more often than they say if not timing chains/tensioners wear when past 100k and massive job to do as on the end of the engine.

Right - our requirements clearly differ and those were my general observations of it! While I drive to work alone I usually transport 2-3 minions to day care or school, on weekends the trunk is full with stuff. Towing is something I currently do very little of
last spring I looked at Touareg (as mentioned previously), X5 (usually too blinged up), ML (small), GL (nice, large, priced obscenely unfortunately, very rare here), Q7 (didn’t like it) before the Land Rover Discovery. Didn’t want a second Swedish car either, the XC90 would have been a strong contender.
On the Touareg I did like the red color on instruments and the display. Interior quality is good as it should be.

Why does virtually everything that VAG produce have to look like a minor variation on the ultimate “vanilla” car, for people that have no interest in cars, the Golf?!
The fact that you’ve not listed any positives, beyond it providing the towing capacity that you already have and it being cheaper than a D4, tells me quite a lot. Can you get enthusiastic about this car? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: FL2 as a second car
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!

Thats my problem, I am enthusiastic with the D3 and it does all I need with ease, but the age/mileage (less so) of mine is a concern as the weight I need to two.
I do seem to be wondering what the next bong will be, what bills am I likely to get. The D3 seems fragile in areas, mainly electronics that so many others are not. The engine and box I know are strong and it has had belts done (main dealer). The better MPG, albeit not that great, the saving on car tax £220 opposed to £535, cheaper servicing are tempting my head, but my heart wants the D3.
A real conumdrum, head over heart or heart over head.
Not sure I can get the same enthusiasm on the VW....... its more of a, well car!!

I understand your logical thinking on this although, led to its ultimate conclusion, it could put you in a soul destroying Kia with only a slightly dubious 7 year warranty to console you!
You’ve got to find a compromise that sits somewhere between head / heart that doesn’t leave you with a car that you’ve no interest in. If you don’t mind me asking, what is the asking price for a 64 plate, 8,000 mile old Toerag? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

LOL never a Kia, shoot me now
The Touareg (an SE, but many toys and gadgets) is £23.8k so does catch the eye and the wallet. Many R-Lines out there with 14k miles for same money all on 15 plates.
The pondering continues........

I like the look of the Touraeg to replace my Amarok but the boot seems incredibly small for the class of vehicle.

I've had a Touareg for 7 years, to be fair it's been a great car, I bought my first Disco to replace it but never got around to selling it, I've since replaced the disco with a newer one but still have the toerag as our second car, it's been hugely reliable other than last year the camshaft went (unbelievably about 2 weeks after the crank had snapped on my first disco!) but even then I think the repair bill to rebuild the engine came in at under £2k, compared to the £18k bill to replace the disco engine, they're a lot cheaper to maintain that's for sure.
They're smaller, don't feel as refined or 'special' as the Disco, but they're cheaper and undeniably more reliable.

Had 4 Kias including 3 Sorentos all used for hard towing. Nothing ever went wrong and all sold on very quickly when the time came.
My neighbour’s new Sportage has the seven year warranty which also includes 14 years paint warranty. Seems pretty comprehensive to me.
Wouldn’t hesitate to have one if circumstances demanded.
