Decision time on a MY12

I have to give a response within the next 24 hours on a new MY12 HSE, it's Buckingham with almond and I can be in it within the next 4 weeks, I have the car on reserve until tomorrow afternoon. I know it's short notice but I wanted to get an idea of the running costs on the MY12, what's the real world mpg and what am I likely to suffer in tyres and servicing over the next 3 years and 50,000 miles? I am sorely tempted, but I won't be doing much off road, my main requirement is 4WD, towing a horse box and ferrying 2 kids around. My preferred alternatives are A6 Avant and Touareg.

Go for it! 8)

Once it gets used to your driving style, expect mpg anything from 30 - 40mpg on long runs, less if towing. Tyres should last 40K miles, and then you should change to longer lasting options. Servicing all depends on dealer hourly rates - if you are lucky and get a local dealer like mine they won't change things like pollen filters etc unless they actually need changing, therefore saving you £££'s.

You'll like it - way better for towing than those other options mentioned! Laughing

I would have said about 15k out of a set of standard tyres, can get a lot more out of some of the other makes. As for MPG there seems to be some very good figures for them but I will not be able to confirm that until my new one arrives. Whistle

I've been thrashing mine a bit lately with 80+ cruising on MWs and lots of hard acceleration overtaking on A & B roads in Norfolk. It's quicker than my X3 3.0D (which is amazing for such a heavy car) and I haven't got less than about 28 mpg.

That doesn't include much stop/start town driving, BUT it's only done 1.5K so is tight still.

I reckon the 30 - 40 mpgs mentioned are defintely on with more sensible driving and 70 odd cruising.

Unfortunately tis NOT a car which encourages ME to drive it gently though. Very Happy

My two year old D4's (original factory fitted Pirelli) tyres are about 25% worn at 11K miles......

I'm regularly getting 33 - 36mpg on long runs and not less than 28-30 round town - if you have a very heavy right foot you can get it down into the teens but that is NOT a challenge! Wink Mine has done about 4300 miles since new now so is loosening up a little. Personally - I love it. Best vehicle I have owned so far. I don't believe you will regret it. Thumbs Up

Great car, for towing and general cruising, nothing better imo.

But they are expensive to run, I'd say assume 25mpg overall, 15k miles on the original tyres then 30k after that, guts of £400 for an annual service, brake pads every 2 years max, and the dreaded £435 annual road tax.

Insurance is reasonable (for me at least) and no mechanical repairs to pay for 3 years.

Happy days Dex

What a variety of thoughts on running costs!

Go for it... I had an A6 and the D4 is light years different in day to day use and simply awesome as a tow vehicle.

Tyres-wise... I am on original tyres at nearly 22,000 (not so gentle) miles in 8 months so will probably be changing them just as the snow falls...

Fuel - it is what it is - nearly three tonnes of metal will use the odd drop but the in-car system is suggesting that I do 33-34 on a run and generally 28 or so when I venture into London. Driving in the smoke does tend to create an approach of 'that's my space and I'm going for it...' which can annihalate your fuel consumption but, hey, what fun!

Only issue when towing is actually remembering that you have horses behind as well as under the bonnet.

You'll be lucky to get 12,000 miles out of those first set of Pirelli Scorpions!

cte, not sure what you are on. I am sitting on 45,000 Klm's at the moment and plenty of tread left.
Good in wet etc.
Cheers, Craig

Yup, had a look and got to agree with that. The original Scorps on the D4 are faring a lot better than the first set on the D3 managed (changed at 3mm, 15k). Mine are also about 25% down after 12k, hopefully they won't start to go quickly from now on in!

Great cars but surely dropping £25k in capital is more interesting than how many tyres you will get through in three years?

I was interested to know the real world running costs of the MY12 based on current owners experience and would like to thank those people who have provided some very helpful information, cheers.
