Dead!!

Travelling up M6 this week in 2015 D4, 108k on the clock, with horse trailer and horse in tow. Stuck in traffic, when a ticking sound started from engine, fairly loud, which got quieter as we increased speed. Because we had been on the road for 7 hours we wanted to get the horse home, so kept going. No lack of power, no warning lights etc. Got up to 50mph, dis around 20 miles then needed a 'comfort stop'. Pulled into services, , engine fine, turned it off. On return went to start engine, it was dead, lights on dash ok, solenoid clicking, but engine dead. Got recovered home, and got car into indy garage. Thought it was starter motor, but informed engine seized, possibly broken crank. Just seems strange how engine was running fine until I switched it off. anyway, glad I didn't stop on hard shoulder to investigate, or we would have had the horse in the trailer a lot longer, at least we could get her out at the services. Ah well, joys of motoring!

Is it truly dead!? Sorry to hear this. Hoping it’s just an earth fault.

The sounds you were hearing certainly suggest broken crank , mine went with a small vibration that improved with speed but when i pulled over to check it would not restart. It is more common than JLR would like you to believe.
Im sure your repairer will have looked at oil filter as that will give it away. That leaves you with the awkward bit im afraid. For what its worth if you are going to replace engine dont fit anything but JLR remanufactered and it will come with 2 year parts and labour warranty. And put in new turbos.

Percyprod, I feel you’re pain. You’ve joined a long list of peeps here where their pride and joys were fine one minute and a paperweight the next. It’s prob the main cure for my addiction to LRs.

I was 'lucky enough' to purchase a D4 that had just had the engine changed for the same reason. I saw the receipt for a LR engine .... £6250!!! Shocked

Sorry to hear of your pain Sad

That's cheap, I have one for genuine LR £22500 fitted.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks all

Thanks everyone for the kind messages of sympathy! Well, it's gone, replaced by a 3.2 Ford Ranger! More practical, and surprisingly good. The Disco was diagnosed with a broken crank, and with recon engines from £2,500 fitted (!!!) to £10,000, or £15,000 with LR, although they can't get them anyway, we decided that it was good money after bad, and so after 4 Discos, one each of series 1,2,3 and 4, I'm afraid we have given in.
