Chaps,
Just about to take delivery of my D4 and have been offered some side steps for it for elderly relatives and the youngsters. However, there's enough 'bright work' on the D4 as it is and i'm not a huge fan of the silver strip down the side. 2 questions:
1. Is it possible to remove the silver strips?
2. And if so, can they be painted with Hammerite paint or will they have to be powder coated?
The excitment is building....... 1996 D1 (Legendary workhorse) - now KIA

Not sure about removing the bright strip, but if you intend using the D4 off-road, I wouldn't fit side steps - they tend to bend up and clamp the doors shut when driving in ruts.
Seeing the owners puzzled face when the dorrs won't open does add to the entertainment for the others on an off road trip though

Luckily, i'm holding on to my old D2 for thrashing around off road! The D4 won't be used for anything too brutal!
I know what you mean though, a friend of mine had them on his D2. He stood on one during a day out stalking, went to take a shot at a deer off the roof of the car and it collapsed underneath is not inconsequential girth!! Needless to say, that bambi managed to make a clean get away! 1996 D1 (Legendary workhorse) - now KIA

The shiney side bits are just rivited on, I've had one of my strips fall off as the salt from the roads has corroded the rivits. A Good job it was on the drive when it fell off and not 70mph down the M6.
