DC cable Sizing Tool

This may be widely known, but I was recently pointed to this site to get info on cable sizes for my latest mod in progress:

Just though others may find it useful. Thumbs Up

interesting, its suggesting that to run my 4x100W spotlights(@34A at 12V) on my roofbasket with a 5M cable run, battery, through car, out back through rear lights, and over roof to front of basket, which is probably more than 5M anyway, I should be using 35mm2 battery cable.
Sounds a bit heavy to me, but I'm no expert.

What did you have the % volt drop set to?

Try it at a bigger acceptable volt drop, and see what that does. 2 or 3% should be ok.

TBH if you do the calc's on mains cable (Say the shower in your house!) and do it by the book, it comes out at about 50mm2 cable - whereas mot pu in 10mm2.

Yes, this tool does seem to be on the cautious side Smile

Came up with 50mm2 cable for a 60A surge draw (30A continuous) on 7m of cable at 3% tolerance (the rear power setup from the Optima)

Am using the 13.5mm2 cable that came with the Traxide for two days now testing without problems (yet, fingers crossed).

Apparently, the same goes for the Anderson plugs: a 50A rated one can handle up to 175A for a short time (a few seconds), so for jump starting even a 50A would suffice I am led to believe (after having ordered a 175A set - doh Embarassed )

Don't know how you are doing the calcs but I have never had it come out at 50mm2 for a shower unless you have a very power hungry shower
