Dashboard Christmas tree lights SOLVED!

Whatever it was, it's now sorted.

The problem :- The car performed perfectly until I put the sidelights on, then a load of amber lights illuminate on the dashboard, shortly followed by the suspension amber and the warning message HDC control off (or similar words) and the suspension lowers. I then have an uncomfortable drive to or from work as its dark and I need the lights. However, driving in daylight without lights is fine.

So after various Google/Forum searches I try checking the bulbs - all working ok, change the brake pedal switch - wasted money, read fault codes - there weren't any, test wiring of rear light clusters - ok, tear more hair out etc.

The solution :- Lucky for me we have a car Guru at work, so it was on with the overcoat for a walk to the other end of our site and a consultation with said Guru. "It must be something to do with the brake lights. try changing the bulbs" he said. Mmmm, the bulbs are all ok, he must be losing his marbles but I will try it anyway.
So 4 new stop and tail light bulbs from the main stealer and HEY PRESTO problem solved. Smile

It was a common problem on the D3 it only liked genuine LR brake light bulbs , happened exactly the same on my D3 !

Do you know if this is because a controller expects a certain exact power draw or because the lights need to signal something over CAN?

Thanks - I had been wondering about this earlier although I hadn’t bothered researching this very deeply yet. What I couldn’t understand was how a bulb could participate in any signaling protocols on top of CAN when the normal ones didn’t have anything that looked like complex electronics on them or there was no cabling for signaling. Thumbs Up

well, the explanation for that is that they do not and hence the lack of any micro controllers (MCUs) on them. The D4 brake light modules on a D3 are a good example, too, as they require resistors to work properly.

In the IT and industrial world it is the opposite - power can be fed over the same circuit as signaling (Power over Ethernet, PoE, up to 60 W). The components and logic needed are significantly more complex, of course.
