Damaged hitch lock

Hi,

I was pulling someone up our icy road the other day and stupidly put the tow strap on the side with locking mechanism for the hitch. The metal hook from the strap hit the green plastic part with the key lock and broke it. Is what left good enough to hold the hitch in place? Or is there a danger of it coming apart? Before it broke, it was rusted in there and I couldn't get the key to turn. See pics.

Thanks.

Your hitch is different to mine in the uk but the locking part that fits to the main chassis looks the same.
On the photo you can see the silver pin that locks the hitch in place if I remember right it’s spring loaded so In theory shouldn’t fall out but I wouldn’t tow with it until repaired

Thanks. I found this video

looks like the locking shaft if bent, so I'm going to need fix this. Was hoping it was just the plastic lock that broke.

Or use one of those square bar things with a shackle eye in the end made to use with the 2" hitch.

Despite the green plastic bit missing, the locking pin is unlikely to work loose as there is a fair sized spring keeping it in place. My worry would be at someone being able to turn the shaft with a pair of Stilsons in order to try to steal the hitch. (not that they couldn't do that anyway.)

Hi Greg,

I believe we talked about rear wheel bearing on youtube recently... What a coincidence I find you here. Maybe this info is too late for you now, I removed and rebuilt my seized and rusted tow hitch last summer, it is spring loaded, without the lock, the shaft would not turn during towing, as for a seized shaft, I spent hours with all kinds methods before the shaft want to turn.
