Bored, so just reading a used car review on the Disco 5.
It said one of its problems was that the DPF cleans itself too often.
This causes contamination to the oil, needing extra oil changes.
I thought the DPF was in the exhaust not the engine...............obviously I am wrong.... 1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

It’s down to injecting additional diesel into the combustion chamber to raise the temperature of the exhaust gasses to burn off excess soot residue in the DPF. If the engine stops in the middle of this happening, excess oil is left on the walls of the combustion chamber and it seeps down, past the piston rings and into the engine oil. Eventually, the oil becomes too dilute and must be changed.
The car keeps track of how many times it’s stopped mid cycle and when it reaches a threshold, it alerts the driver to the need for an oil change. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Thanks for that information. So does that mean that the DPF is no longer an issue, as in the earlier SDV6 models ? 1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

DPF’s are an issue, to a greater or lesser extent, on all cars that are fitted with them. Even From other manufacturers! Some seem particularly vulnerable, such as the V6 diesel in most D5’s, but I’ve had to get one early oil change in a ‘65 plate D4’s. Plenty of low speed, city driving well help to clog the filter and trigger more regenerations, while lots of short journeys will mean more engine stops mid regeneration cycle. If this is you, buy a petrol engined car (but even those are starting to be fitted with particulate filters, so who knows where we go from there!).
Beware manufacturers’ claims that “it’s now been fixed”, As it’s all to easy for a manufacturer to simply move the threshold at which a service warning is triggered. Without an oil sample analysis, it’s not possible to know for sure. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Very interesting thanks. My neighbour has just ditched a Range Rover SDV6 because it was throwing DPF's about every six months, very expensive fix too.
Sadly he bought one of those big Jaguar 4X4's.............poor quality IMHO. 1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch
