D4 Transfer Box Problem - Robbie's MY13 HSE
Like a good boy I exercised the transfer box yesterday after hoovering out the holiday / bits of Devon. On selection of Low the car really hunched down with a jolt and a straining noise. Engaging High again was equally abrupt.
Tried it again today it selection of Low was a bit brutal and really pulled against the brakes. Selection of High was equally dramatic and the wife (on the outside doing gardening) said the car suddenly smelt funny as well as observing the unrefined noises. The car will move in Low ok, fwd and rev and the gearbox itself feels fine but in L-Reverse there is a pronounced whine proportional to speed.
As for codes, as well as a few nuisance comms I found:
TCCM Transfer Case:
- P183A Range Change Mechanical Failure
- P2711 Unexpected Mechanical Gear Disengagement
Not seen this before - any ideas or other things to check?

am booked in tomorrow (fri 6th 8 am for diagnostics ) will keep you updated

I hadn't really noticed that until you mentioned it.....mine sends a jerk through the car also,which I don't remember the D3 doing.....I can't honestly remember if it did it before the gearbox software update

No idea if I can reset the transfer box. My Hawkeye does not have this and I have not seen it the IID Tool menu either (gearbox yes, transfer box not seen).
I could feel it engage on my D3 but it was more subtle. The main clue was the increase in brake pedal required and feeling the transmission taking the load. I've driven a few D4s inc the D4s at the LRE and they do not shudder on engagement to the extent mine does.
I've yet to test the 4x4 capability of my D4, that usually comes in winter and visiting friends in the hills of Wales, so this may have been with me since new.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I have actually just gone out and tried this again ...and yes, it is a much more aggressive process than on my D3
Tbh I don't regularly exercise the trf box,so I too,cannot be sure ....but I do know I couldn't hear or feel the D3 change ratio to the extent that my D4 does it.....bit concerned that your wife noticed a smell ...at the very least Id suggest your transfer box oil needs changed now,and hopefully a re-calibration of the ecu is all that's needed "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Hmmm, subjectively it seems better the more I use it. Perhaps it just needs bedding in when new and unused??
Anyway, cleared the codes and exercised the car, gearbox and transfer box. On returning home the car is showing zero faults (famous last words).
Guess I need to keep an eye on it for a while but if anyone has experience of these codes I am all ears.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Has the whining in L reverse gone away Robbie? If it hasn't I would suggest demonstrating it at the dealership.

I have had the g/box update done and shifting from high/low is normal although I do use my low box quite a lot Cheers Ian

It's much less than it was and I suspect if it had been as unobtrusive as it is now then I would not have noticed it.
Had a good crawl under the car and all looks fine. Will try the more demanding TR modes tomorrow, otherwise it will look more like Curb Crawl than Rock Crawl.
