D4 towing....I may regret this !! |
|
I am thinking I may consider a D4 later in the year, early next year and it's an obvious question and I think I know the answer;
Is the D4 a good towcar ?
My D3 was good as standard and then superb once remapped, I drove it a few weeks back and even after 160k it feels great...alas I am no longer the owner...
A D4 XS is now on the christmas list so I am keen to learn of any twin axle tintenters who have thoughts on this please
D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

Mine tows our big twin axle just no problem at all the tow/trailer assist pack, or whatever LR call it, also works great, can't remember if I paid for this extra or if it was standard. D4 just been voted best tow car 2013. You can't go wrong.

I tow a twin axle tintent and the D4 is perfect for this. I had a manual D3 before this and it was superb also. The rear view camera on the D4 makes hitching up a doddle, the hi-lo box is ideal for maneuvering and the adjustable air suspension & auto box both add to the ease of use.
I have towed with many vehicles including other large 4x4s and the D4 is the best there is for the job
The only downsides are that I can get the fuel consumption down to about 18mpg if I try, and the boot is so vast that we end up taking all matter of paraphernalia, but it's all part of the trip really.
You won't regret buying a D4 if towing is a consideration.

Looks as though they forgot to breath in
On the subject of towing, I'm only pulling a 1500kg single axle, but as a recent convert from Freel2, apart from the performance side when towing, it sits a 1200rpm at 60, fuel consumption is actually better with the Disco 4 than it was with my Freelander 2 SD4, I make brisk progress and getting an easy high 24 to the gallon and that is by the pump method and not on the lieometer.

Is this a serious question
given the D3 D4 has won many awards since its introduction, as "best tow car" - then yes, its not bad at towing.
the D4 is much better than the D3 IMO Duncan

Deadly serious....I have heard all the "you cant feel it behind you" comments and in fairness you can and should be able to feel anything being towed....D3 ownership was smooth and towing was pretty effortless and so when considering a D4 I wanted genuine feedback from the caravan folks as to their opinion. D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

I tow a TA caravan, the D4 tow's it very well and yes I would say it tows as if the caravan is not behind. I do not believe you will be dissapointed with a D4 and am sure in standard state it would tow better than a chiped D3 MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Having been involved in an annual towing event I can say that the D4 isn't a good towcar, it's brilliant! When it first appeared at the event in 2010, it walked away with the title as it was miles ahead of the rest. Since then, others have caught up in some respects, but the D4 remains the best all round. The new Range Rover and Merc ML pushed it very close this year, but again, each had draw backs (Range Rover - cost, and ML - cost as tested (£73,000!), and particularly, practicality).
I bought my D4 on the back of doing the testing.

Id read and heard from other people about how good they are. Ive towed with a current shape VW Touareg and VW Transporter both of which are supposed to be good tow cars and to be fair to the Touareg it is with our twin axle.
However, the D4 is in a different league! When fully loaded and with 2 bikes and a roof box on top it was quite frankly incredible on a 1600 mile round trip and it had only done 300miles before we left! D4 Fuji White HSE with Black Pack, TV, RSE, Tow Pack, Side Steps & Heated Steering Wheel
