That’s a bummer, try opening the bleed nipple on the caliper in question which might help, the piston usually goes back in ok but as you guess it’s got to be equally centred, hope you get on ok,

so got the new seal - which way round does it go? it's sort of cup shaped - does the smaller part of the cup go down inside the hole, or outwards away from it?!

From memory the seal has a slight taper on one edge this should be fitted in a direction so that the pressure from the fluid chamber forces the taper against the piston creating the seal

Not a brilliant drawing but it might help

A new caliper is £60

You are dealing with a critical safety system on the car

Is it really worth the risk?

After thinking about it your probably right Mike, best not to take a chance if it’s not built up correctly, not worth taking the risk if a new caliper is only £60 Bow down

Some on eBay new for just under £40 if that helps
number:261152454140 check which side it’s for or give it an early Christmas and do both Mr. Green

Or message Mike and get them from him, at least you’ll know the quality will be good.

so, trying to tighten brake calliper bracket bolts back up to 275 NM - which, in old money, is "damn tight" I kept on going with my torque wrench. It got tougher and tougher as expected but still no torque wrench click, then suddenly got easier. Took bolt back out, with some difficulty, and it's now elongated..... so I guess one shouldn't reuse the bolts, but nowhere does it say that..... or was I doing something wrong?

At least it didn't shear Whistle
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

true. But I can't quite understand why it didn't work properly, tbh. Time to get new bolts I think.
The 275 Nm in Bodsy's bible is right, isn't it?

I thought you were working on the rear calipers? If you are the Torques for the 15mm bi hex caliper bolts 115Nm and the 13 mm slide bolts 35Nm normally best to use new bolts for these which come with the disc pad kit and thread lock on the caliper carrier bolts. Thumbs Up

hmmm
think I've misread. Am doing rears, bi-hex's - which aren't included in the kit, it seems - but if it's 115 that explains it Very Happy

so discs on, pads on, wheel on one one side, just need to bleed the side I rebuilt the piston on. Where do people usually get the right sized pipe from to go from brake bleed nipple into my pot of dot4? The bits of piping I have lying around are all too big, and straws are too small Laughing

hmmmm. Help needed again.

All back together, EPB adjusted as per Bodsy, callipers back on, wheels on, etc.

But on IID Tool, the parking brake won't come out of Mounting to Latched (i.e. from service to normal). Went into service and tried the epb unjam procedure, but it says 'this function failed, E3'.

What's the likely problem and diagnosis approach? Note that the EPB doesn't appear to be on.

ta.....

You’ve put all the fuses back in haven’t you ?

The EPB needs reset.

If the tool can’t reset it at your own discretion you could try applying the EPB as normal with the ignition on and hope it resets itself.

If you got the wheels etc on you’ve probably already bled the brakes, flex tube either part of the easy bleed kit or a length of clear 6mm ID tube warmed up to go over the bleed nipple for a nice tight fit

Hope you get on ok
Thumbs Up
