Do not rely on the quantity reading on iid.
When I change the oil & put back say 5.75ltrs, sometimes the iid displays 4.5ltrs.
Each car seems slightly different.
Rely on the on screen display, unless that is obviously wrong.

Does the system rely totally on the driver checking the oil level on the D4? Will the first warning that oil level is getting low be either the low oil pressure warning light and the smell of disintegrating engine? I check my level as often as I can but I am sure there are many who will go from service to service without checking.
I know that cars with just dipsticks rely on the driver checking but with an electronic system I would have thought that a proactive warning that oil level is approaching minimum before it goes below minimum would be very desirable.

I think as has already been said, the only interactive warning with the driver is when the pressure falls - nothing to do with the level - by which time it may well be too late.
It does seem crazy to me that in a complex system for checking the level, telling you how much oil to add, working out if the oil is being diluted by fuel, somebody didn't think: lets confirm the oil level at ignition on, pre cranking, even if only an estimate and if low show a message to the driver. It couldn't be that difficult to have designed that in could it?

They wouldn't get sales of all those shiny new engines then.

I use millers xf longlife c1. I don't have a dpf so only need a1 but c1 seems more readily available

From around '94 to '02, I owned a series of Citroen XM's (no sympathy required - they were absolutely brilliant!) and they gave a very clear display of the oil level every time that the ignition was switched on. It was a proper light up display with a real needle and everything! The car even had a proper dipstick too, so there was a mechanical back up and a way of checking how clean the oil was.
So, if this technology was available then, there's no reason why it couldn't be now!
I use Fuchs Titan 5W30 SUPERSYN F ECO DT, and at the oil service my indie put 6.5L in.
After letting the car rest overnight, the calculated volume shown on IID is 5.1L.--

!!! I was reading this thread to find if anyone recommended any particular oils and decided to go check the level on a whim ... I've had the car 3 weeks now and hadn't looked (no lectures).
"below minimum refer to handbook ..." or similar. b*gg*r.
like I suspect many others, I assumed a warning light would have come on.
anyone know anywhere round Manchester that doesn't charge an arm and a leg ?.

Last night I checked my oil level... Having run the car for about 10 minutes I parked it on the flat and left it for about 20 minutes. Walked back to it and did the oil check. The system said it was half full but a notice came up saying "add 1.0 litre". So I dutifully walked to Halfords, paid a fortune for some decent oil, and topped it up. I didn't put quite the full litre in and then left the vehicle overnight. This morning I repeated the process although the car wasn't driven far at all. Checked the oil level and the reading is still slap bang in the middle and says 'ok'.
What I don't understand is why by adding nearly 1 litre the read out hasn't changed at all? Should I add more oil or just leave it now the car seems happy? I obviously don't want to overfill it but would feel far happier if the read out said full not 50%.
Any advice?

I would just run it up to temp and check as you did previously. It was quite cold last night so remotely possible that new oil hasn’t all run down. More likely to be need for the drive and check though.
