They work whenever you touch them. You'll get used to it but a little annoying at the start when turning the wheel it's possibole to catch the up or down shift and switch to manual but if you leave it alone for three seonds, it reverts to auto. So if you want to resort to engine braking, you flick the minus paddle (downshift and it will engage the next gear down and remain in manual until you accelerate when after three seconds (or so) of no manual input it will revert to auto. Once you're in manual mode, as long as you keep changing gear, it'll stay there.

Hope that helps.

Mine has been good. Have the paddles in a tt 3.2 as well so like the way they work. Hardest thing is overcoming what is natural. It takes a while to acknowledge you have put the car in park with handbrake on cos your natural actions to move a lever and pull a handbrake are now twist a button which disappears with a tiny pull of a button to put handbrake on. I tow with mine regular and it is a major improvement on the tdv6 engine. Smooth, quiet and will quickly fly up to 100 when you need to crack on down the m1.

Are people generally using handbrakes on the D4's? A few D3 owners i know never use the handbrake on their autos and I was looking forward to NOT using the handbrake as its been so problematic on my current D3 manual.

Does the new D4 automatically put the handbrake on as with my D3 when you remove the key? Embarassed DOH! Just remembered, NO IGNITION KEY is there !!

My 2008 one does every time you pull the key out, assumed all the manuals did?

ISTR that if you hold the brake lever down as you switch off, the EPB does not apply.

Have to lift up the 'finger brake' to apply EPB on MY12 after switching off the motor.

Aren't all D3 Autos the same as that? - i.e. You have to lift the h/brake lever to activate it.
AFAIK all the manual D3's automatically activate h/brake once you take the key out

If you catch the paddle and go into manual by mistake, you can quickly revert to auto by pulling and holding one of the paddles.

Yes Pottsy's correct.

A pull of 2 secs or less on the + paddle sets you back to EITHER D or S in full AUTO mode. HOWEVER if you don't do any paddling for about 10 seconds in D it auto reverts to D AUTO. BUT this does NOT happen in S mode - it will stay in whatever gear you select on the paddle, within the confines of the REV sensor safety up or down shifts. It only reverts to S AUTO with a 2 second + paddle pull.

Never used the handbrake on the D3 or 4. Thumbs Up
Might just check it every now and again to see if it still works, but they do that anyway when it's serviced. Never had an issue.

used the handbrake all the time on my previous 2 D3's and now my D4, only ever had 2 problems and that was with the second D3. First time park brake collapsed (at 70 mph Shocked on a dual carriageway) - repaired under warranty - D3 was only a month old at the time. Second time it was because of a rather loud screamer - car was 3.5 years old and again was repaired under warranty Thumbs Up

Bit confused by this, when I have used th paddles the car stays in gear and the display on the dash shows that it's in manual mode, the only way I can get it to return to auto is by moving the selector to sport and then back to D. Am I missing something?

As mentioned earlier, just hold one of the paddles up for 2 or 3 seconds to get back to fully auto. If that doesn't work then I guess you have a problem.
