Hello all.
I’m going to be in a position in a few months time to move on my faithful old D3 HSE and upgrade to something much newer.
I brought the D3 in March 2010 with 87K miles on her, and she’s now at 225K miles.
The only time anyone else has worked on her is a Gearbox flush and a Torque Converter change.
So as you can imagine I’m very well equated with her Oily and grubby bits, having fixed some of them on multiple occasions now. And I couldn't have done it without this forum.
I briefly thought about a 2 or 3 year old L405 Range Rover with that lovely 4.4 TDV8. I love the way they look, but couldn’t live with the small boot or the rear seats not folding completely flat.
I also thought about a used D5, but really dislike like how they look, and actually didn’t realise until I looked at one closely that the boot aperture is @100mm less in height.
Strangely some may think, I also really can’t stand the thought of having to move the rear seats around, slowly, by buttons.
So I’m going to save some cash and find a late D4 for a few years, I still think the classic Disco shape is great to look at in a rugged sort of way, and will have a better chance of looking after it myself.
I’ll be looking for an HSE Lux or Landmark in whatever colour takes my fancy, but it will have to have a dark interior. You never know, the new Defender may be available by the time it gets moved on.
I’ll be buying a new licence for my Nanocom Evo to cover it as well.
This Forum has been so much help over the years it's actually quite comforting to know I'll still be have it's back-up.
As mentioned I’m well acquainted with D3s, and would have no worries about inspecting one for sale, but don’t have a clue what else I should be looking at on a D4.
What are the specifics I should check that I wouldn’t know from my D3 knowledge?
Is there a particular year that has a specific failure point, like the oil pump on a 2007 D3?
Etc, Etc?
Thanks
Nasher. Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

Cracked inlet manifolds 2012-2015 (I think). Remove the engine cover and look for oil misting on the inlet manifolds and on the foam lining of the engine cover either side towards the back.
Belt service due at 7 years / 112000 miles
Worn suspension - same as the D3
Snapped crank - probably fairly obvious when you start it MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
MY2019 D5 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - sold to a dealer for a crazy price! - So good I bought another!
MY2012 D4 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - retired to a new home

Heard that leaking rear cam seals was a problem until a new design came in - mine went and fixing a c £30 part involved taking the body off and 13 hours of labour.
Check TSB for crank position sensor as well. Not sute which MY it affacted - might be earlier than the vehickles you have in mind. Mine failed and involved dropping the gearbox out for a full fix.
Thumbs up as well for the manifold issue - TSB somewhere on the forum for that as well.

Many thanks for your replies.
Sorry some more daft questions.
Looking on Autotrader etc there appear to be plenty of 2013-16 D4 HSE and Landmarks available in lots of different colours, all with what appears to be the same spec. I’m hoping that will still be the case in a few months time.
I’m not bothered about buying a low mileage, immaculate 2013/4 model instead of a 2016 model car if the spec is right, but I’d obviously like to benefit from the lower road tax class of the later car, so are all 8 speed D4s the same spec engine?
Or have I got the whole road tax class thing wrong?
Is there anything else that a 2016 HSE Lux or Landmark will have that a 2014 model will not have?
Are there any 2017 model D4s about?
Oh and I wish I had the money now as Michael Calvert’s D4 Landmark in Waitomo Grey is a great looking car that I’d have snapped up in a few months time.

Big one would would be the Euro6 spec engine that makes it more future proof for entering city centres I would guess.

Yep, I think it's the Euro6 I'm thinking of when I mentioned Road tax.
When did the D4 become compliant?
Or didn't it?
Thanks

My 64 plate D4 (Nov 14) was the face lift with the start stop but didn't have the Ad Blue... was the lower tax bracket so I think it was about then it came in (I'm sure someone will confirm?) I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Ah, thanks.
I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't know later D4s came with Ad Blue!
Is that what makes them Euro6 compliant?

OK, thanks for that.
It appears then a Start/Stop with Ad Blue is the spec to look out for.
I'm narrowing it down.
Unfortunately I really don't like the wheels with 5 pairs of spokes, so may end up changing them if everything else is what I want.
I have quite a few spares, both new and used, in the garage for my D3 that I'll need to sort through and see what's compatible with the later car. Very little I fear.
I must also try to see if I can get the fixed towbar off the D3 soon, as I plan to get it blasted and powdercoated before fitting it to a D4 replacement.
I fitted it the week I brought the D3 in March 2010 and haven't removed it since, so wish me luck!

Your really looking for 65 plate onwards for Euro 6, you might be lucky with a very late 15 plate, don’t think they started producing the Euro 6 versions till July 2015

Mine has Adblue. It is a 15 plate June 2015 MY16 model. According to my dealer it was the first one they sold. Gary

Doing my research it appears there is a nightmare of different specs etc around, with Landmarks of different specs and HSE and HSE Lux's being mixed up by dealers and having different equipment.
It's not helped by dealers, including LR main dealers, not knowing their product.
I've been told this week that a 15 plate non EU6 engined car was £270 year tax - by a main dealer.
The main thing that dealers don't appear to know about is the ICE system.
Every one has said that all HSE, HSE Lux and Landmarks have the top specification stereo fitted, but we know that's not true.
Is there an easy way to tell, from say images on a typical Autotrader add what stereo is fitted?
And sorry for the basic question, but what is the top spec?
I'd rather not travel to view a car and find it's not what I want.
Thanks

On the D3 - and earlier D4s - you have the top spec sound system if there are round loud speakers in the rear pillars in the cargo hold. I think the same is true for late model D4s; there would be round speakers in the back. The front door card speaker covers should have a “Meridian Surround” label.
You should be able to verify the build time config with the VIN from TOPIx. The best system for D4 is called “Meridian Surround Sound System”, has 16 speakers, a subwoofer and 825 Watts. There is also a Meridian Audio system which is 380 Watts.
Edit: what you’re looking for is the round thing partially hidden by the seatbelt and the 3rd row seat on page 53 in this PDF https://www.landrover-me.com/Images/ebroch...261654.pdf. It is obvious also from a picture of the cargo hold - you’ll be able to see whether there is something round on the pillars or not if the tailgate is open.

You will also need a set of tow bar stabiliser bolts as the D3’s cannot be removed and will not fit It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
