D4 HSE Lux Battery change

The main battery in the 65Plate D4 HSE Lux I’ve just brought appears to be the original factory one, and I can’t find anything in the extensive history that came with it to say it’s ever been changed.

I haven’t even put a meter on it to test the voltage, I’ll do that over the weekend.
But having had to change the battery in my D3 HSE every 3 years to keep everything working properly and free from warning ‘Bongs’ I’m going to do some preventative maintenance and fit a new one before we get a period of colder weather.

Everything appears to be working, except the stop start, so perhaps that will start working after I change it.
I’m not bothered by the stop start not working, but would like to know why, if that makes sense.

So, do I need to watch out for anything?
Is there anything on the D4 HSE Lux that I need to be aware of or I will cock up when I remove the power for a few minutes?
Please tell me a new battery doesn’t need to be coded to the car or anything daft like that.

I can’t believe I’m asking this question really, as normally a battery change wouldn’t worry me, but being new to something as complex as a D4 I’d rather benefit from the collective experience on here.

Thanks

Nasher.

Oh, and is it worth changing the smaller Stop Start battery at the same time?

Thanks guys.

Is that No to changing the small battery?
Or No I'm not going to cock anything up by changing the big battery?

As mentioned I don't really want the Stop start to work, but do want to know why it's not working in case it's the start of other troubles and something I need to be throwing back at the supplying dealer sooner rather than later.

If the supplying dealer is going to give you a new stop/start batter take it, of course - you can then disconnect it.

If the replacements is not free then IMHO don't bother.

I have a June 2015 Disco on original main battery that sits for several days at a time. Never have any issues , but I charge it up with a CTEK every 3 weeks or so, as I read about potential issues.
If you don’t have the ECO stop start not available orange Icon on the dash it’s most likely the main battery is a bit low on charge. Give it a charge and see if it starts working. There can be other causes of it but this is by far the most common.
If the ECO stop start Orange Icon appears (seems to be the same one as if you press the button to turn it off), then that is generally an indication that the little battery is down on charge. In my case it needed replacing.
I think, if I were you, I would press the stop start off button first to check the indicator is working, then charge the main battery and check the voltage on the small.
The small battery is easy to change and costs around £45 (LR charge about £150 from memory). Some sort of reset is required after a main battery change (people do this using an IID if you have one).
Let us know what you find.
Cheers
 Gary

Thanks all, that's what I was after, I do need to tell the car I've changed it's battery.

Nigel. I've not told the dealer anything is wrong yet, but will let them know if either battery is on it's way out. You never know, I might get something out of them.

I've been struggling to get around to sorting out my GAP IID.
I've paid the re-register fee on line, but need to plug it into the car and get the number off it to email them, which I'm hoping to do tomorrow.

I don't have any warning lights on all the time, but the light does come on if I switch the system off with the button.

As mentioned the main battery change is a preventative maintenance thing really following my experiance with my D3.
The D4 is in use every day so doesn't go on a charger.

My Stop/Start didnt work when I got her but like you even though I wont use it I have to have it working, OCD i think. The battery actuator between the two batteries had failed on mine but the dealer stuck new batteries on as well and all working nicely again. Just that i turn it off as part of my start up procedure whilst raising to standard height etc. If you dont like a yellow warning light on your dash because you have switched it temp off then dont fix it Thumbs Up

Hi Nasher. I was in exactly the same position. Just got a 64 d4 lux and the yellow marked paint on the battery told me it was original. Most of the time eco light was on and tart stop never worked. Tested the small battery and it was 10v so replaced it. Start stop still didn’t work but the eco was off at least. Tested main battery and it was 11.9 v so thought best to change it. Nothing special to change it just like D3 it’s a pain in the back! All I needed to do was reset clock and initialise windows so one touch works (all the way down then all the way holding it when the window stops when up release switch then pull up again for about 2 secs. Needs doing in each window). Stop start now working fine and no low battery warning Thumbs Up

Thanks all

So she's definitely in need of a new Main battery.

I'm getting a nice healthy 14.2V with the engine running, but only 12.0 without the engine running.

What's the recommended battery for a 65 plate D4 HSE Lux?
Is it the same Exide EA1000 that is reccomended for the D3 HSE?
https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/exide/ea1000/

Or do I need something different for a Stop/start vehicle?
This?? https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/exide/ek950/

Thanks

Nasher.

I wouldn’t want your first choice, you need an AGM battery.

Yup AGM is the one you need. I have never been keen on exide. The LR original is exide and they don’t seem to last. It was a toss up between a Bosch or the Halfords one for me. The Halfords is Made by yuasa and I have had their batteries on motorbikes and they seem good. Varta would be the other option.

I went for a Bosch from Tayna in the end discount code Facebook45 get a few pounds off and it was about £ 180. How are you getting on with the D4 lux in general?
