D4 - Head fighting Heart!!!
As per title, the two are fighting each other.
Had the D3 from new in 2005, traded in for a new D4 in 2011.
After a downturn in business and one monthly bill for 2.5k on the D4 (excl warranty issues) I decided it just wasn't worth keeping, especially with the high mileage I was putting on it.
So went to a mere car for a year, but needed to get back in a Land Rover, so bought a MY11 Freelander 2 in Aug14.
However, good as the FL2 is, I've always felt I'm not in the right car!
So issue is, I'm now in the position to change back to a D4, however the head is fighting the heart.
Head-case:
FL2 has been great, cheap to run and 4.5 years on hasn't cost me a penny in repairs (except the usual servicing, tyres, brakes, bulbs, wipers etc.)
Does everything I want (even off road - got underbody plates), tho no low range and boot is smaller but covers my needs with seats folded.
I'm mostly in the FL2 myself & wife, and now doing just 6k mikes per annum.
All paid, so doesn't owe me anything & no real reason to change.
Heart-attack:
I loved my D3 & D4 and never wanted to own/drive any other vehicle on the planet.
It did everything for me and my lifestyle.
I still 'swoon' when I see a nice D4 and think "that's what I should be driving".
Sadly (or thankfully) the D5 doesn't do that for me.
But, to change would mean paying out an extra £10 - £14k to get a similar specced model that's just 1 to 2 years younger.
Also I'd have the extra running costs and the constant nightmare of broken cranks etc.
Especially as I'm now just covering 6k miles pa.
Expensive to be just sitting down the drive ... but then it'll look cool (even tho it's an outdated model). 8)
So I don't need one, I just want one .....what should I do. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Had to sell my MY15 D4 HSE Lux to fund new house..... Got myself a very nice HSE FL2, nothing wrong with it, just not a disco.
4 months later, FL2 gone, a very cheap D3 2005 and 525d on the drive.
Just back from 1000m trip to W3st Scotland, the 'S' model D3 was awsome, so glad to be back in a Disco
The BMW is my daily 45mpg drive, got both cars by adding £1000 to the FL2 sale Iggy/Ieuan

I know exactly what your saying , when I sold the D3 a few years ago I said that’s it NEVER AGAIN !!! If drained my bank and put my blood pressure through the roof many times , the tdv8 Ffrr was amazing but not as easy for work use .
But I seen this
I thought it , I work long hours , you could drop dead tomorrow so it
And and I love it
I won’t say I don’t worry about it going wrong because I do , but feels worth it ( at the moment )
Not much savings in the pot now but hay ho
Go for it -------------------------------------------------
if you cant hold on dont let go , it ill come in handy for something even if you never use it.

Ronp, same as you. still debating whether to keep the D3 or trade it for a D4. However just read on another post DG believes that if the Landrover warranty wont cover the crank then Landrover itself will (assuming it has met all services etc)
That is now maybe making the decision easier ? I guess if i buy it from a Landrover dealer with full service history and get serviced at a VAT LR specialist then I may be OK ? Only question is when do Landrover start changing their mind / is there an age limit on the car ?James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

It's not going to be an endless level of cover....LR will have a criteria which if met will attract anything from a scalable %age contribution to full cover dependent on the vehicle age...or if any one or more of the criteria aren't met then probably nothing.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I was in this boat a while back. I had a selection of Audi's after I traded my D3 in over 6 years ago. I missed the practicality of it daily and now I am back in a D4 and couldn't be happier. Go for it!

But the warranty will only be available for cars within a set age and mileage criteria, eg you wouldn't get a LR extended warranty on a 10 year old car with 200K miles. If LR extended warranty accept your car then anything that isn't a consumable or specifically excluded would be covered. Are you saying that crank failures that meet the servicing criteria are covered on a sliding scale of age and mileage? Or are you saying that if your car is over 3 years old LR will potentially contribute? If the latter then that is generous, but what people seem to want (and what I would have wanted to stay with LR in addition to better dealers) is their LR extended warranty to cover the crank either by way of LR paying out themselves or the warranty company to do so for the cost of the appropriate repair.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
