D4 GS - Sat Nav Install Complete with some pics :-)
Mines a D4 GS with no nav and the uselss info screen, why did Landrover bother with this.
Any how, ive gone with the Nuvi 1490TV and hard wired to cig lighters, Land Rover logo on start etc. Hard wired the aux in and put a splitter on the aux, so i can run ipod audio and nav tv together, works ok if you turn your ipod down when navigating. overall really pleased and happy to lend advise about relocating the info screen etc. All works great and you just need to open the top glove box to see the info screen ie pairing a new phone etc. jobs a definate good un and TV in motion too all plumbed into the audio ACE 8)
TV reception is really good, hidden all the wires and it looks factory fresh
Just need to trim the info screen, thinking of ordering a new D4 GS surround and trimming that so it looks factory fit into the top glove box. Best bit is its all reversible, not cutting or hacking for those that are worried about the level of dash dismantling. Happy to offer advise and support to those with poverty spec GS owners looking for some nav, also going to get a rear camera in due course.
Cheers

That's useful to know, lots of potential customers over here for that sort of conversion, though it would probably foul up the LR warranty....

thanks, im well pleased, cant wait to get out and watch a bit of tellie on the driveway, outside various places waiting for the kids - swimming, ballet, cubs, ju jitsu, shopping - delete as appropriate!
All D4 GS owners need to do this mod, no excuses!

my warranty runs out soon enough, also not sure this would effect a warranty? to replace the info screen is a 20 minute job now i know what im doing, may leave the info screen as is in the dash, buy a new D4 Surround and have it on standby to swap over if it needs to go into the stealers for any reason. but really all your doing is popping a few plastic trims off and the info screen is a simple block plug that you shove across to the top glove box. so no real mods or irreversible changes at all.
Anyone who has a GS must look at thier info screens and sigh how rubbish it is, a friend has a fiesta van with the exact same screen as the GS D4

What is worse than that is these unique-to-Ireland 5 seat Utility Discovery 4 examples which are selling well over here at the moment, most of which have the high spec audio, with the Nav button, but no Nav installed!2016 Discovery 4 Commercial

Yes excellent job there, the MY12 D4 GS screen is a little better but would still qualify for this mod IMO. Although you would need a MY10 or 11 surround as would you believe the newer opening is even smaller.

Sat Nav & Reverse camea
Hi,
Just resurrecting this old thread.
Did you manage to add the reverse camera to the sat nav system? Thinking of doing the same to my lowly speced GS. Which reverse camera did you get?
I totally agree- the current radio screen is a waste of space!
Simon - I don't think that particular model GPS supports a reversing camera input... but there are other models which do.
Met - I'm interested to know two things:
1) How is the unit powered on? Normally, you press the power button - which is now hidden behind the D4 bezel.
2) How is it secured to the bezel? I'm guessing double-sided tape on the edge of the bezel to seal gap and secure the front... and something else for the body of the GPS.
Good work Met!
Cheers,
Rob

My Garmin Nuvi (3760) turns on when there is power to the device, and off when there isn't. But I agree it would be good to be able to turn it off so you don't have to listen to school zone warnings at weekends and in holidays.

Hi Rob,
The sat nav does have a reverse camera input so prob able to hook it up.
The unit will turn on when the car is turned on and off when you switch off. Its hard wired into the "system". I did the same in my Freelander 2 before it was sadly written off...

Hello chaps not been on here for a while sorry, sold the d4 and never added the camera. It powered up on ignition in and powered down 30secs delay on power off and it prompted you of you wished to stay on to watch tv etc which is really handy, also it has it's own battery so never took away from car battery when watching tv.
Secured with idiot strip metal (bendy meccano with holes) screwed into oem fittings so it was very secure.
