D4 Gearbox Overheat Warning

edit: just realised this is in the wrong section! Doh!

Had a minor heart attack this morning when my 2014 Disco came up with a warning "Gearbox is overheating". Admittedly I was in Sport mode, however I was crawling in traffic. The warning came up without any warning lights or sound, stayed on for about 3 seconds and then went away.

Got home, plugged in the Lynx and the only code present is P2787 which is "Clutch Temperature Too High - Over temperature". According to the workshop manual "Rear differential actuator active for prolonged duration due to driving style or terrain". The suggested fix is allow the diff to cool, reset the warning. It says the DTC is set when the clutch pack calculated temperature exceed 200 degrees C.

Driving style was "stuck in traffic". Terrain was "a flat road in a town". I had driven around 7 miles normally from the engine being cold.

Has anyone else experienced this? If my gearbox was genuinely overheating I would have at least expected some audible warning and a warning light, not a friendly reminder! If I had been looking at something out the window I probably could have missed it altogether. Plus if a DTC is set, then surely some warning symbol should be illuminated to warn me?

Hi Tom
I had a similar issue when in low range (Drive) climbing a steep hill a few months back. I spoke to a 4WD instructor about it and he said any extended driving at low speed should be done using manual selection of gears (Command Shift mode for the D3/D4). This stops the auto transmission continually hunting between gears which in turn keeps the temperature down. I went off road for a week recently and had no issues with transmission temp using his advice.

You have a problem somewhere as in no way should you be getting such a warning in those conditions, let alone when it is only a few degrees above freezing.

It wasn't even a proper warning. If my gearbox was genuinely overheating I would have expected at least a sound as well. I spoke to a trustworthy local LR dealer and he said don't worry about it. He said he had a MY15 disco and it came up with several false alarms. Not very reassuring and I might see about how to check or change the oils in the gearbox, transfer and rear diff.

There would be no noise associated with an overheating diff clutch pack and the clutch should have been doing nothing in the conditions quoted.

Locking rear diffs are rather rare beasts and I have only worked on one D4 that had the option fitted.

It doesn't have a locking rear diff. That information has come from what the workshop manual relates to the fault code.

Ok, then we can be sure your non-existent clutches in your non-existent rear locker have not overheated.

The fault mask is clearly incorrectly configured on your vehicle.
