D4 front bearing? Thoughts please
Afternoon all. Just after peoples thoughts on this please.
Noticed recently droning on front end (rhythmic with speed), noticed it first on smooth tarmac and now I’ve heard it it’s bugging me.
Been in for MOT last week, I asked them to check and a couple of the mechanics had a look and no bearing issues. Don’t think they test drove.
I don’t mind replacing them if they are at early stages of failure but wondering if anything else could be worth a look. 2016 car 95k miles
Worth mentioning got two front tyres put on weeks ago. Matched to rear, same type as before. Convinced that the motorway noise is louder too but I have no reference what ‘normal’ is
Thanks

Front differential or bearings would be my guess. A bearing can start to make a noise before you can feel any movement when trying to check it.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Cheers. Similar to what I was thinking. For what front hubs cost I think I’m just going to do both front’s and see how it goes

I have a possibly similar noise...
Iy is road speed linked & at 60mph it sounds like a WW2 buzz bomb droning away.
To me, it sounds like a front wheel bearing, so I am hoping ny Disco 4 has a 4 bolt removeable bearing hub i can replace easier than pulling the strut.

I ended up replacing both. It’s miles better and whisper quiet now. Really glad I did it. If you are diying the job, brace yourself also worth having a look at my post in technical which has a useful tip for removal

Hi Paulc2017,
I think I will do BOTH front bearings...
I am hoping they are the 4-bolt-on units, so I dont have to press the damned things out of the hub/strut.
Meanwhile, I will check if there is any oil in the front diff. there no hint of leakage or goo stuck on the diff case - but that does not mean the diff isnt knackered.
we will soon fund out, & it will be good to get rid of the sound or WW11 Bombers when I drive lol

It’ll be worth it. The bearing comes in the carrier so you replace carrier as well. There is also two pitches on hub nut. Usually you get sent both.
Also worth checking hub nut torques. There is two number floating around I think 320nm and 230nm - but please check. The latter numbers are a revision to help the bearing last longer.

One of my previous D4 commercials had a noise in the driveline.
Even though the main dealer acknowledged the problem they were not prepared to fix it under the warranty.
However I did finally discover that it was the centre bearing on the rear propshaft.
It was a thrumming noise under load mostly up hill on smooth roads.
I would have a look at that first as the front wheel bearings are a right pain to get off! If it’s that then it has to be easier to change than a wheel bearing?Discovery commercial tdv6 auto 2013

Well, i decided i could not put up with the car sounding like an old Bomber any more.
The hub bolts were a real to remove & one sheared off in the old hub.
I was bashing away with a sledge hammer for 3 hours tylrying not to hit the ABS sensor....
Lots of WD40, NOTHING moved...
I got bored with this... and it was 25° in my workshop...
So
I found a LONG HANDLED sledge hammer, & 3 minutes later the part was off...
So, now I know the easy way, i will do the other one next week.
The vehicle sounds silent now, but the other bearing creaks a bit from the other bearing.... and no more bombing raids 🤣😅😂
Removed my front hub bearing last night. Hammering didnt seem to get me anywhere, even with the big sledge. I cut down an M16 bolt and screwed a wide and deep nut onto it. Put it between the back of the hub and the hub knuckle and using 2 spanners, unscrewed the nut so it pushed the bearing off. Worked an absolute treat. Would have used heat but I ran out of gas for the burner.

Im trying to work out where this M16 bolt & nut was put to push the hub off ??
Please explain so an idiot can understand ??
I set it up there again for a photo. Obv everything is loose now
I changed the driveshaft last week but I torqued up the hub to the correct 230Nm so I’m hoping it’s coincidence the bearing has failed rather than something I have done.
