Have seen a 65 plate D4 HSE 79,000 miles in immaculate condition (internal very clean outside the paintwork has literally no marks etc) Full complete Main Dealer service history including belts changed last year.
Its price is £25,900.
Any advice on what to look out for or whether the price is right is very welcome.
TIA

I have owned a my64 HSE luxury with factory fitted remote FBH and HSW for 5 years and the only thing I would swap it for is another HSE with HSWheel, factory fitted remote FBHeater, adaptive CC and adaptive xenon lights.
The service history can be confirmed online and if done recently you have nothing to worry about except perhaps a gearbox oil flush(negotiable?).
You don’t say who the seller is, main dealer, garage dealer or private, if private make sure it is paid for. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Sammy, I had a 2016 Landmark that was written off so I replaced it with a 65 plate HSELuxury earlier this year. The price does seem a little high but the low mileage and history probably justifies that.
I’d check the sound of the EPB to ensure it’s not likely to fail soon, check the suspension goes up and down without any faults and check for nice dry, dusty inlet manifolds. Lastly move the heatshield out of the way and check for the centre rubber splitting on the rear propshaft. If it’s got side steps get them off ASAP as the sills will be rusty underneath
Apart from servicing and common things like EPB on my old one (I do take them off- road a lot), centre propshaft bearing wear and a new steering UJ, my D4’s have given me 20k miles a year of wonderful ownership, used in every way they should, towing the caravan, cruising the motorway, camping and enjoying green lanes; there’s no other car like them 1978 Series 3 88 Military Green (Gone)

1997 Discovery 1 XS Cobalt Blue (Gone)
1999 Defender 110 TD5 Safari Epsom Green (Gone)

In fairness our D4 is high milage and internally looks new even with using it as a dive vehicle and the dogs car.
But….unless you are prepared for very high maintenance bills on an overly awkward engine i would avoid one.
Not a problem if you have the money or aptitude and time to work on it yourself but it has put me off ever buying a Land Rover again. I do my own work but it is time intensive and the nature of the body being fitted over the engine is a pita.
Dealers rip you off to a stupid level and competant garages are few and far between for these vehicles.
Next car will either be a Jeep Wrangler or the new Toyota Landcruiser.

I would be checking for availability of a good trusted Land Rover specialist independent garage in your area. That will keep your running costs down and , in my view, smooth out your ownership.
I went for closing traffic , blind spot and cross traffic monitoring on my 2015 car which I believe was the most important extra, so worth checking if it has this system fitted.
I would check when the batteries (both small and main) were last replaced. The originals will be pretty much end of life on a car this age if still fitted. A warranty is important. Issues I’ve had that it would be worth finding out if covered by a warranty:
Battery replacement
Door lock ceasing to work ( this may leave your door stuck locked, meaning entry from inside by wrecking the door card. I’ve had one rear door lock give up the ghost.
Tailgate lock ceased working (stuck shut)
Rear prop shaft centre bearing (you should ask for an inspection report if not replaced already) in my view
Sun roof drain leaking. Check the foot wells and carpets for damp ( front and rear). You can test these by pouring water down them and check it comes out under the car .
Get some security solutions for your front and rear lights which can be stolen .
Be prepared to do (or get done) an extra oil change per year , due to oil dilution . This is more prevalent on ad blue models like the one you’re looking at if you do shorter journeys.
Brake pipe corrosion is a possibility and the LR service schedule has them being replaced as an option by the age of your car, so get a report on those (or check if replaced).
Good luck Gary

in the present market its about 5k over priced in my view ! It is just getting to the age when maintenance events may start to add up . So unless you have a real need for that type of vehicle , I would walk on by.
For that money you can pick up D5s now as any discovery value is dropping at anything up to £1K a month right now.

Hi,
I would stick the reg in wbac to find out what the trade would want to buy it at auction for
very low at the mo, if they want it at all
then add on a bit if its private, (sellers already lost enough!)
add a bit more if its an indie dealer and add on loads more if its main stealer,
after all the dealers do like to make some profit and they should be giving a warranty
(more profit for the main stealer but should also be better warranty, allegedly!)

Gearbox flush needs doing.
Great cars with decent service history at a proper place.
Go for it but with your eyes open. You'll need a good independent to maintain it.
If you do that you'll stand the best possibility of another 95k.
IMHO ignore the comparison with a D5... Jim
