D4 8-speed Auto Filter and Fluid change.

13 plate D4 8-speed gearbox filter and fluid change, what can I expect to pay?

Is it a big job, DIY possible?

Seen OEM kit for circa £244 is that gvfm?

Thank you in advance.

How does flushing have the same effect as replacing with new filter and new fluid, are the filters a fixed metallic element that can be cleaned adequately in situ, and is this an LR recommended practice?

Originally LR’s recommendation was to do nothing since the fluid was “for life” Whistle Whistle Whistle

A properly done megaflush a. introduces detergents/cleaning agents into the existing fluid volume b. exchanges all fluid in a controlled manner by controlling the pumping of old fluid out and new fluid in, c. finally adds conditioners at the end of the flush.

If you drop the pan to replace the filter, and all that, you’re not doing a volume for volume exchange but dilute the existing ATF.

The ideal is probably new filter + megaflush but many do the latter only.

YMMV.

Unless you're replacing like with like, the 'conditioners' will not be the same as those in ZF Lifeguard 8.
The oil will (hopefully) conform to the minimum published specification but will not be equal to the oil used by the transmission manufacturer nor that used by a LR dealer when carrying out an oil & filter change.

Also bear in mind there are quite a few 'had megaflush done {insert short time period} ago, going to have it done again' compared to the vanishingly small number of repeat (ZF Lifeguard 8) oil & filter changes having to be repeated after the same period. We used to get HA vehicles in with gearchange issues, an oil & filter change would see them good for the next 200k or so...

IMO, buy cheap, buy twice - or more.

This would be my preferred approach, proper kit, proper job, not one to cut corners on the important stuff.

I've enquired with two independents in Derby, one clearly doesn't want the job, the other never got back to me.

Can look at Nottingham to see if anyone will take it on, other than that it looks like main dealer stuff.

Whatever happened to customer service and sound business in the Censored of a country.

Talk to Ollie at Auto-Line in Shardlow, 01332 799199 should be able to sort it out for you.
