D3 V8 PCV / Alternator

Had an interesting drive home last night, coming off the m1 and the steering suddenly felt a bit all over the place.

Limped home and parked up.

Today the engine started seemed to make a whooshing/whistling sound Which I don’t remember hearing before.

I’ve also found that when I start it and idle the car battery voltage isn’t increasing from 12.1. When I went for a run it was all over the place from 12.6 to 14.7 and wasn’t sitting still.

I’m thinking alternator maybe at fault but the sound was strange. Almost like air escaping front left of the engine. After idling for a while it went.

How quick on start would you expect to see voltage pick up?

Any thoughts

I have an integrated voltage meter connected to the cigarette lighter along with two USB sockets. The voltage should go up immediately upon engine start and it’s not supposed to “jump around”. Don’t remember the proper voltage from the top of my head but I’ve seen 14.7 -ish volts usually.

It’ll (= should) reduce the voltage in 20-30 minutes, or so.

Never heard that sound before, sorry. The guesses/root causes presented in that other URL sound all reasonable.

If you need the parts for auxiliary belts, tensioners and pulleys - they’re here https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post1891719...20#1891719

Me neither but I changed my belts, tensioner and idler within a few weeks of having the car @ 105k. Slight bearing issue within the idler

With the battery voltage not increasing at idle I’m thinking it must be alternator related somewhere along the line .

Plus 1 for the alternator - you need a DENSO Alternator DAN991.

Mine cost me £165 in 2019 as a brand new item not refurbished.

whooshing noise points to the viscous fan - it seems to be the first thing the ECU kicks in when there's a fault or potential fault

that kicking in would in turn show up any belt issues as it creates quite a lot of drag

voltage wise mine starts up somewhere between 14.5 and 15v straight away dropping down to low 14s after a while and then is rock solid.

I do have the mother of all batteries on mine though and on the old battery the start voltage was slightly less - I think because the Odyssey is slightly different internally it will take almost whatever the alternator can give quite happily

I checked this morning and at cold start voltage went to immediately 14.6-14.7 and stayed there during the pre-school delivery run Whistle

In case it matters I’ve got a Bosch AGM battery.

Make sure it isn't your ac compressor by switching the eco button.

My compressor bearings are on the way out and make a similar noise.

Thanks

Thanks all

Now at the local specialists

The sat nav screen started going dim which I think may also be a sign of alternator

Still no warning lights tho

My D2 had a phase go down in the reg rec so it was still putting an output out above 12v so none of the warning lights came on but it was week as a kitten and only pushing out about 12.2 volts. the charge warning light only really comes on when there is nothing over 12v I believe
