Defender all the way
Of course the D3 can/will do it in air conditioned comfort - but no where near as much fun
........ and Defenders don't break? and when/if they do cheap to fix

Minefield of answers to the question but I would vote for a Defender as a pure off road toy or green-laner. Always depends on the situation but a Defender usually wins with better approach, departure angles, lighter and a narrower body. D3 is wide, heavy and has lots of easily damaged trim but the traction control systems will sometimes get you places that a Defender would struggle! 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Air con is also not always a good idea. When you get out of your 18-22C air con vehicle into desert heat of 40+C it can hit you like the proverbial hammer.
Yes I have driven our non air con vehicles in warm temperatures

When we were driving through +52oC heat in the Moroccan desert last year ..I can assure you Air con was the best idea ever invented 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Disco , I've been in convoys with the disco and defenders, the disco does it in style and comfort and gets through terrain that bogs the defender down, unless you mod the defender big tyres diff locks etc, you've only got to throw in a tight turn to see all your momentum gone, if we had an Ark Royal it can turn better than a defender.
Oh and I've got both and have off roaded them both
