D3 Suspension Issue & Hawkeye Total Question

I have a D3 with a suspension issue - it says on the dash Suspension Fault - Normal Ride Height Only.
My question is, should/can a Hawkeye identify any specific issues with that and is the Hawkeye Total I've read about on a search here the right bit of kit to buy - will it plug straight in or is there something else I need to buy - leads or more software etc?

It drives perfectly apart from the above issue - no limp modes or anything like that, just no variation on ride height. From what I have found searching it appears I need to provide codes somehow?

Thanks

I have a hawkeye pro which is very good for P38s, Disco 2 etc.
DON'T buy it for a Disco 3
buy a nanocom or GAP's Iidtool.
I have the latter and it is really useful. I had the blackbox, the faulmate version and sold the software a few years back. it is also good but the IIdtool is much easier to use.
Fixing LR problems very far from Solihull.
That's why my newest car is a 1999 Disco 2 V8 with 285.000 miles

The problem is the missing documentation, not the LR

You do need the codes to point you in the right direction.

Normal Ride Height only can be quite a few things I'm afraid.

How old is the car
How old is the suspension Compressor? Has it been replaced/Upgraded with an AMK (vs the original Hitachi?). How old are the suspension airbags etc..

There are only two types of Air Suspension issue.

1. Electrical
2. Pneumatic

The problem is that a pneumatic problem such as a sticking valve in the air block (possibly due to the drier desiccant turning to dust and contaminating the airlines and seals) can cause the Compressor to run and run.. and overheat! It can burn out OR melt an air line! The wiring issues on D3's in terms of the Air Suspension to appear to be showing quite a rise in occurrence right now and often this means the overheat feedback to the ECU just does not get there and the Compressor will ot shut off. Also IF you have an AMK unit has your car been re-programmed for the AMK? Again it can be a fickle thing.. Some work without and some do need re-programmed.

When it comes to re-programming the GAP iid is your best bet (IMHO). Having had a Hawkeye the level/Depth of information and programming you can get to just is not there VS the IID.

Hope this helps a little?

Thank you Annette - I'll start looking for the GAP model

Thanks - its a 2006 and as yet have not removed the covers to see which it is. I have since posting found the FL10 fuse 60 amp blown - On refitting a fresh one the system worked and inflated with no warning lights - except I did get a message saying it was inflating slowly. I turned off engine and have monitored its height now for 2 days - its maintained the same level all round in that time (805mm front n/s, 810 o/s 83.5 nearside rear and 850 offside and I hadnt checked tyre pressures and its on a bit of a slope.)

Have you or anyone else had any success with reconditioning your pump? I'm assuming if there was a leak it would have gone down a bit at least - it didnt take long to inflate even though message said it was slow (couple of minutes? - Not sure how long it should take)

I have not changed the relay yet - could that cause an overheat or excessive run on the compressor?

Regards

Sounds a bit like you have an air leak or a really slow compressor.
Now If you have diagnostics (mine is the IidTool Pro which does all the modern ones) you can watch the gallery pressure and the compressor temperature.
After you have found the problem you can also recalibrate (HAWKEYE fails here) .

Don't get me wrong.. I need the hawkeye for a zillion things, even Toyotas and Mazdas. It is just not the best idea for a Disco3/RRS

Does it - I was hoping as it wasn't going down and hasn't moved in 36 hours it meant no air leaks but I suppose supply is isolated once pumped up. I couldn't hear anything when it was pumping but what with the engine running and all... Definitely no air noises once I turned off the engine.
I have not heard these running, I've just bought it with this issue, but when the pump runs its pretty quiet - I expected it to have quite a brrrdd to it - is that usual?

I just looked at the videos on the Gap website - certainly looks like a nice piece of kit, and I could see a Range Rover suspension going up and down, it was pretty quick - when mine went up it was quite indiscernible. It got there, but as the screen said - slowly

Has anyone tried the kits for reconditioning your own pump? Do they ever work - I was looking at video by x8r.com showing filter replenishment and piston seal changes..

Yes they do work.. but not for exhaust valve problems.
I had to go all the way to San José to find a seal which nobody sells.

The other stuff and the silica gel is a piece of cake. Must admit I have mainly repaired RRSPORT and later l322 compressors but it is the same part.

The compressor can be rebuilt although the results can be varied.
The easier swap is a new compressor but will be more expensive.
If you are local to me and want any help reading codes just let me know.

I have both the Hawkeye and the Gap IID Bluetooth.
The Gap IID is by far the better tool and can do much more including edit the ccf files to enable different features not enabled from the factory.
Without the Gap tool this would need a visit to the dealer.
The ccf edit is locked to one vehicle on the standard tool but you can still read fault codes on other vehicles.

Understood - The IID seems to be the pro's kit of choice - shame it locks to one vehicle

Thanks Baz
