D3 sat nav surround/frame/bezel? Part Number?

Hi all,

Looking to do some experimenting with a Disco 3 tablet install into a pov spec D3 with just the cubby hole bit at the moment.

I really want to do some testing with fitting a D3 sat-nav frame (with my tablet inside instead of the unit) but I'm really only looking for the metallic frame that surrounds the sat nav, not the actual sat-nav unit itself. I hope that makes sense?

Does anyone know if there is a part number for this? Or have an old faulty sat-nav unit that I can take off of them?

I don't really want to have to spend £120 ish for a whole sat-nav unit that I only want the frame and bezel from!

Cheers in advance,

Rob

Hi Rob
When I installed my 7inch tablet in my HSE I did not use the original Sat Nav Bezel but used the bezel for a D4 Sat Nav part no LR013640. It required much careful trimming and cutting with a dremmel but the finished item looks factory fitted.
Hope that's of some help to you

If you decide to fit the surround Narpy has posted a link to Rob I have one indoors (LR013639) I bought when I was working out what to do but found it no good for a 7in Tablet although it would be fine 5in device.

Hey Len,

Thanks for that - I've looked through that thread before, and as much as it looks great, I'm still looking for the 7 inch tablet install instead.

May I ask how you fixed the D4 surround? I was always going to use a D4 surround as that what I've used on my D4 to fit the same 7" tablet, but all of the mounting points are entirely different. I was going to make something custom that would fit into the points - How did you do it? Any photos??

Thanks in advance!

I will sort some pics when I get home tomorrow evening but basically I bought another H Trim from the bay of e as I knew there was going to be some trimming needed in order to get the bezel flush against the back edge of the H Trim. I then used a small self tapper on each side of the H Trim and screwed 2 L brackets to the air vents to hold the Tablet and bezel in place. Bit of plastic ground off of H Trim in order to fit power lead and Jack plug and in it went. I'm happy with it and as I said, will post pics tomorrow.

Thats much appreciated - thank you.

I was going down the route of bending the two 'tabs' at the bottom of the disco 4 bezel up to 90 degrees as the screw holes are the same width apart on the D3 as they on the D4, but just in different places...very difficult to explain!

And then a second fixing from the back of the tablet to fit into the 'notches' that the usual factory sat nav would sort of hang/slot into.

Looking forward to your pics though - Interested to see what you've done.

The 2 tabs on the bottom I have trimmed and they slot in 2 available slots on the bottom of the H Trim, they stop it falling down and keep it straight then pinched in with the L brackets. Tablet and bezel is actually attached all to the H Trim. In my case with the HSE, all the brackets are removed from the original Sat Nav screen in order to just be able to get it further into the dash but leave all electrics intact so as not to cause any other problems. All works really well and saves me having to stick things to the windscreen and have wires trailing up the dash when towing the caravan. Only problem I had once in the summer was the sun banging on the screen rendered it too hot to boot up but one of those silver foil dash covers stopped that happening. May look at fitting a computer processor fan to the back of the Tablet to aid cooling but like I say, it's only happened the one time

Yeah thats happened to mine in the D4 a few times too, but I can live without it sometimes.

It's quite difficult to visualise what you've done, but I think it sort of makes sense. Looking forward to seeing what you've done though as it sounds like it might be easier than my way!!

Cheers.

Hi Rob, pics of install as promised. First time posting pics so not too sure how this is gonna pan out but here goes.
Pic 1.
So after trimming most of the bezel away leaving a flush back and the 2 tabs trimmed on the bottom you can see them slotted in the H Trim and the 2 L Brackets I mentioned.

Pic 2.
You can see here the L Bracket screwed into the Air vent tunnel to hold the Tablet against the Bezel.

Pic 3.
I had to slightly trim the back edge of the upper H Trim in order to allow the tablet to sit flush against the Bezel as the Tablet is wider than the Bezel itself.

Pic 4.
How it looks from the front. I'm happy with it

Hope that helps you out Rob

Hey Len,

Thats absolutely magic, thanks!

Looks like we've both done exactly the same with the cutting of the D4 bezel to make it sit flush, but I'm still a bit confused with the two tabs at the bottom. I have cut mine off, which I think might have been a mistake.

I've now ordered an H trim of my own so that I can experiment with it and see what I can work out. I did try to fit my current D4 bezel in a friends D3 H trim last night and it seemed ever so slightly too big? Perhaps wasn't fitting it correctly. Will have a better go when mine turns up.

Incidentally, how do you keep the sat-nav in the bezel? I've kept mine in with aluminium strips, but I'm considering just glue gunning it in instead...

Hi Rob
Glad you found it useful. I think you may need another bezel because without the 2 Tabs on the bottom you have cut off you have nothing to secure the bottom.
My Tablet is held by the lip along the bottom of the bezel to keep it straight and the 2 L brackets hold it in place. I just kept trimming away and lining up until I had it in the correct place. Just a little at a time, go too far you can't go back and you have to buy the bits again. Although the back is pretty butchered the front remains as is and gives the factory look.

Yeah I think that makes sense.

Is there any chance you could take some more detailed photos of the two tabs at the bottom?

Thanks,

Hi Rob
So, in the 1st & 2nd picture you can see the Trimming done to the bottom of the Bezel and the 2 Tabs

Side on view to see the Trimming to allow the Tablet to span the Bezel

And finally the slots in which the 2 Tabs slide into along the bottom edge of the H Trim

Hope that makes it crystal clear for you

Hi Len.

That's a great looking install. I've spent this week reading the various retro fit sat nav threads and thought I had decided upon the gs surround and garmin but this looks so good! Great work.

Any info on here regarding the tablet you went for, how its cabled up etc?

Are all the options shown functional?

Cheers
Mike
