D3 key repair?

One of my keys is showing a little sign of wear, to the extent I can see the innards through the hole at the top of the unlock button. Is is possible (ie easy) to change out the case with the existing electronic parts & key blade, or just bung some gaffer tape over the hole to keep the dust out? It's now relegated to spare key status, but will make sure it gets used on the odd long haul to keep the battery good.

My eBay one and new rechargeable battery is still going well. Took me about 30 mins and less than £10 to swap all the innards to a new case Thumbs Up

Looks a bit scary getting the old gubbins out, looks like lots of scope to damage the electronics. Confused SWMBO asks if I'm happy with just one key!! Laughing Laughing

Might be the time to change the battery, thought from this thread that's a bit scary and I have never wielded a soldering iron in my life. http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic63124.h...+%2Bcasing

And be reminded of it for the rest of my days? Plus if she did it and damaged the leckie bits inside it would still be my fault. That's just the way it is. Thud

There are firms online who will carry out the repair for you, this is a random one off the web http://www.automobilelocksmith.co.uk/repai...-fob.html. there are many others

It's not hard

To do this....
All you need is a sharp knife (Stanley) & some care.... Not to cut yourself
It isn't possible to break the existing key "shell"
You have to carefully cut the shell at the ultrasonic welded join.....with the sharp knife
& resist the temptation to insert a screwdriver into the case deep enough to touch or disrupt the printed circuit board.
It took me maybe five minutes to do this

The circuit board pops out & fits into the new key shell.
The actual key just swaps over too....

On the new key shell I bought from Amazon (just short of £7..00) the plastic halves need to be glued back to form a rugged assembly...I used Araldite Rapid, this allows the assembly to be positioned properly whilst the glue sets (5 mins).

The keys I have done are like new ones - indistinguishable in use & to look at
There are companies who this....it takes 10 mins of DIY so why bother & you don't have to send your keys away - more secure & no risk of losing it (or them)
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

I have just had delivery of my new cases from eBay, the look identical the originals...very nice indeed.
Do folk also replace the battery whilst they are on with it?
If so does anyone know which battery to buy?

Cheers
Andy
