D3 crankshaft oil seal,

Morning all,
I'm after a bit of advice/knowledge from those who know,
Picked my new to me d3 07 plate up 2 weeks ago,
So on Tuesday put it in to have front and rear belts done and upgraded oil pump fitted, as advised on various forums, as I've no idea when the were done,
On Wednesday get a call from the independent landy garage, so call them to be told that the car needs a new engine,
So i go straight to work shop to be told the oil pump has been upgraded, but when removed the crankshaft has 3 groove marks where the oil seal sits, and have been told it is beyond repair and they will not even put the thing back together, because it wont be safe to drive,so it would need to be transported back home, they gave a price to fit a recon engine at between £4700-£5700,
Or they will buy the car off me,
As said after a bit of advice really,
Might add I'm no mechanic,
Thanks
Al,

I have seen this happen on a D4 where the seal has worn a groove in the crank but i dont know how it would wear three grooves.

Did you buy this car privately or through a garage? If its through a garage you will be able to claim on the warranty.

The garage are correct if there is a groove the seal will not stop the oil leaking, but you dont need to spent the sums they are talking about for a new engine.

A new genuine crankshaft will cost you £700 you will also need a few other bits like seals and rear trigger wheel for the crank sensor, in total around £1000 in parts.
You then need a good garage to remove the body and lift out the engine and fit the new parts.
If you can do it yourself you can remove the engine with the body still on you will just need to hire an engine crane

Thanks ,
I bought the car from a private seller,
As said I'm no mechanic, so couldn't do it myself
But was wondering if the garage were being honest,as they seemed so keen to buy it off me,
So would it be worth getting the car lifted to mine and getting a mobile mechanic to sort it ,
I only paid £3500 for it so really dont want to spend a lot on it,and this has sort of deflated me a bit, so just thinking should I cut my losses and take there offer, they have said they will sell it on with a warranty once they have repaired it,

I get this all the time a work, the garages find huge amounts of work then want to buy the vehicle cheap.
I always get the vehicles returned to my workshop for investigation and quite often than not i find the work required is alot less than the garages quote and a few times i find nothing wrong.

I would get pictures of the crank if you can,.
with the old pumps the seal had to go into the pump at a certain depth to stop it blocking off an oil way, with the new pumps there is a part of the casting to stop this happening which means you can fit the seal in deeper and possibly avoid the groove.

Was the seal leaking before you took the car to the garage ?, if not then why would it leak with a new one ??.

As far as I know there was no oil leak,as in it stood on the drive for a week with no oil on the drive to be seen,
I said that I'd seen no sign of an oil leak and was told probably because of the under trays ,but when I asked them to lift the car on their lift it didn't seem to have any under trays fitted, also they said it had been pumped with some sort of sealant,I take it they meant the oil pump,
They then went on to say the rear suspension arms would probably need replaced soon at a cost of £500,and brake pipes done soon ,so I'm starting to wonder if there being less than truthful,

There cant be any sealant in or around the seal as this would block the oil way's. If it was me I would get my car back, they sound like a bunch of crooks.

I have seen some cranks with ribbs in them on some older D3's but the seals have never leaked.

I would get a new pump and belts, seal and do it, if it leaks then go from there..

Thats why I asked if it leaked before, and when they leak they cover the bottom of the car with oil not just the lower plate.

maybe sign a disclaimer and ask them to put it back together with the new parts. at the previously agreed price

For a £3500 its worth the gamble for a minor oil leak

The PTFE seals used on these engines are totally different to the old rubber seals used on other engines so it may seal ok

How much are they offering to buy the car from you? Is this a reasonable sum from your perspective?

If not I would be inclined to get the car back on a "yellow taxi" and take it to any of the recommended LR indys in and around Gateshead.

There are a number of indys that are recommend on here:
