So all these companies spend MILLIONS on development in combining waxes, clothes, cleaners etc just for some old wives tales on PETROL N WD40 
In the past you could possibly get away with the cruder methods of cleaning the second most valuable asset we all purchase with Washing Up liquid, but nowadays with the ECO brigade in overload, making the manufacurers use water based paints and not chemical, ALL OUR PAINT is prone to attack without the knowledge from people like JKP  , and the correct cleaning products.

Three dealerships I worked at in the early 90s had a policy of wiping down all cars pre-PDI with a petrol-soaked chamois to get rid of all the cack from the transporter run. An intensive attack of the Autoglym fleet products later, and one gleaming car would be presented to the punter I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Wash / clay with lube / polish with random orbit polisher and pads / sealant (2 coats)
Looks great, lasts for ages with two coats of a decent sealant - crap won't stick to a well polished and sealed finish.
Even made a couple of short home videos for a detailing forum to show how easy the sealant was to apply, and how well it protected the paintwork.

That's the good thing about a decent sealant - I only have to actually polish the car twice a year!
The rest of the time it's just a hand wash and dry and it looks like new  08 LR3 SE V8 - 02 D2 SE7 V8

Not that I'm a great believer in cleaning any of my cars (it's just as well I have photos - now I know what colour the D3 actually is!), but...
The D3 has been Scotchguard-ed while the wife's new car will be "AGlaze" treated (http://www.aglaze.com/) which I'm assured means no more waxing required (having kids, I'm more interested in the interior trim protection this process offers). But even with the service wash, there are still a few tree sap marks that haven't been removed: how should I best remove these, and then what do I need to do afterwards given the existing treatments?
