D3 Aircon issues

I have a 56 plate D3 HSE. My cooling side of my air con was fine towards the end of last year but it has been set high since.

Come to switch it back to cool today and it is luke warm. Had a look at othe rposts on the subject but being a big novice with cars I am still confused.

The rear air con unit is also luke warm - are they both independant? i.e. is there a seperate front unit. The pipes on the rear are very hot.

Any help appreciated as to what to check. Have checked fuse 51

Only think i have had done is new rear and rear to front brake pipes last week. Could anything have been knocked?

There is a refrigerant circuit for the front and one for the auxiliary circuit which feeds the 3rd row seats and the roof outlets for the 2nd row seats. What often happens is one of the refrigerant pipes for the aux circuit fails and the refrigerant is lost (for both circuits). The option is to either replace the pipe(s) or blank the rear aircon (which is what I did). Unless you often have passengers in the 3rd row you probably wouldn't notice. It's much cheaper to blank.

If you get hold of a UV torch shine it around in the area of the pipework and see if you can see evidence of the tell tale dye. There are other things it could be, but failure of the rear pipes is common.

[Edit]The rear aircon pipes run along the passenger side sill and past the compressor[/Edit]

The pipes you can feel to the rear that are hot will most likely be the hot water pipes to the rear of the car, they run down the drivers side inner sill, a/c is the other side of the car.

These are on the passengers side. (left hand side as you look from the back) Two silver pipes next to a lagged pipe that go into what I am assuming is the aircon which appears to be functioning

Are any of the pipes cold when the aircon is on? There are some obvious ones under the bonnet (you may have to lift the engine cover - I can't remember whether or not that's necessary).

Blanking is not that difficult and certainly easier / cheaper than replacing the rear a/c pipes if that's where the issue lies. Really the only way to check the system integrity is to get it re-gassed and see if it holds pressure. If not, using a U/V light to find the tell tale dye is the next step. If it holds pressure, the problem is elsewhere...

No point gassing it if it leaks, get a proper a/c man to come and look at it and he will pressurise it with nitrogen and get his soapy water bottle out and search for the leak/bubbles.

Thanks all. Last few days have been 'trying' with the old lad (car that is).

£400 on new brake pipes to get it through it's MOT (looking at some stories on here that was a cheap escape).

Then get this air con issue and to add to it the driver side door decided not to unlock so tried the manual passenger side key entry only to be a little heavy handed and break the bloody end cover bit.

And to add to all that the wife is now nagging about how crap the car is and is a cash cow. Well she wasn't bloody complaining when I was safely driving her to work during the recent bad snow was she.
