D3 4.4i V8- Rattle sound on cold start |
|
Hello.
I have a problem with a cold start. There is always a rumbling sound like a divorce. After the second start, he is calm. I thought it was vanity, because it's all about it. The local renowned mechanic assured me that the Vanos (VVT Unit) are okay with the words: Vanos are not, because when oil pressure is not, they get stuck and can not move and cause rattling. And that's the divorce. You have changed, but the sound is still there. Further words the mechanics were that they are pressure valves in the heads, and that they must head down, 14 days after a failure with the distribution, it is again a pressure valve on the pump, the exchange of which must go shed down. The repair, or rather the removal of the sound, went as if you were going to a dentist with a broken crown and returned after six sixty-six sundays.
The question is: do you have any experience with it? How about those vanamas and that valve?
I want to fix it, but it's not a mistake to try.
Thanks to Petr

Sorry. I did look at your video and though..... ouch.
My V8 on start up is very smooth. Also VANOS is a BMW item. The V8 in the Discovery is a AJ Jaguar engine and I dont believe it has VANOS.

Yes - I had this problem on my previous V8 D3. It never got any worse in my ownership, so I did nothing about it. Spoke to my mechanic who didn't think it was worth fixing, as the value of the car and the cost of the work didn't stack up.

Just looking at the workshop manual and it has a VVT system
4.4 V8 has a VCT system (variable camshaft timing) which appears to be solenoid activated. I assume if one of these is not working an error code should be thrown?
Also looking at the proceedure it seems fairly straight forward to replace if there was a problem with the solenoid.
Timing Drive Components (12.65.13)
Special Service Tools
Camshaft setting/locking tool 303-530
Crankshaft locking tool 303-645
Timing chain tensioning tool 303-532
Removal
NOTE :
Published : Feb 10, 2005
This procedure covers the removal and installation of the following components: timing chains, chain guides, tensioners and sprockets.
1 . Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Specifications (Section 41400)
2 . WARNING: Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always support the vehicle on safety stands.
Raise and support the vehicle.
3 . Remove the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to Engine Front Cover (12.65.01) (Section 303-01)
4 . Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. For additional information, refer to Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor (18.30.12) (Section 303-14)
5 . Lock the crankshaft. Install the special tool.
Install the screw.
6 . Remove the RH variable camshaft timing (VCT) control solenoid housing. Remove the 3 bolts.
Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
7 . Install the special tool to the RH cylinder head.

Hi
Did you ever work out what this noise was?
Sounds a lot like what my V8 is doing now.
Thanks in anticipation BT Gap IID

Sounds suspiciously like timing chain rattle to me, do these engines have a hydraulic tensioner?
I've only tinkered with the BMW V8 and not the Jaguar one.
I know the Jaguar V8's have had issues with cam chain tensioners upto around MY2000 and plastic parts wearing or breaking up.
Given that its on start up I would be looking at the tensioner first

Thanks for the response.
And sorry for the thread hijack.
I may have an answer after off of the back of the last reply and it looks like the VVT.
I put the IID on and the timing angles are wildly out and so had a look in the bay. Around the electrical connector for what I assume is the VVT until there is a lot of oil and nothing on the opposite side. I don’t have time to take the covers off to examine the unit now but all evidence is currently pointing to a failed unit. BT Gap IID

Hi there,
if you browse the Youtube channel of the thread starter (see video link) then you'll discover a second video which he uploaded a couple of month after the first vid. And the title is "D3 4.4 new VVT units". So I guess new vvt's made the trick for him.

At least its solved
My previous TD5 had a terrible impending death type rattle from the day I bought it to the day I sold it
Never solved and never developed in to anything serious
