4.75t and 3.5t usually. I also have a smaller 1.5t one that I only use if I need to tow a "normal" car a short distance (out of a muddy field for example), the larger ones not normall fitting through the towing loops on road cars. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Use a rope with hooks at both end - already attached - no need for shackles

Or if you really must have some get the Bow Shackle not the D Shackle. The ropes craig mentioned and proper Bow shackles can be sourced from here http://www.liftingandcrane.co.uk/offroadrecovery/shackles.php They make the ropes for LRE and they will make them any length you want. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Andrew-S did you buy direct from lifting and crane? They have a web-shop but it seems a bit limited and "clunky"...
Alternatly can anyone else recommend an online (non-ebay) store? I was going to use mm-4x4.com but they are out of the shackles, all I am after is a tow strap and a pair of shackles to match nothing fancy (existing tow rope not rated for Disco, I need to "upgrade" clearly, even though I never want to use it, don't want to tow someone out of a ditch and have it break)

AndrewS did do a group buy a while back.
BobbyCrispBox did a group buy a little while ago, when i got my rope.
I'd speak direct to liftingandcrane, via the old dog and bone, to get exactly what you want.
However, i have also purchased several ropes/strops/shackles from Frogs Island in Oxford, all perfectly suited to the D3 specifications.
You could also try Devon 4x4 who are also good and several members have bought from there before.

Thanks Craig, I could have resorted to the old dog but tis end of the day, and I only want a teeny order so I was not convinced they would be interested in selling direct.
I forgot about Frog, I am in the Reading area so they are not too far away either, will check Devon as well which are all names I have heard of from reading LR magazines, thanks for pointers.
Its not urgent anyway, just want to upgrade tow strap I already have as sod's law says I will need it if I don't have it, and I would not want to pull anything with Disco and 1.5 or 2T strap (forget which I have) in case it went 'ting....

No worries mate.
Don't forget that you may need a road legal length, and a suitable recovery length if offroading, but apologies if im teaching you to suck eggs.

I know nothing of the eggs, please direct!
We will not be really offroading, at least for a while. I have hellfrauds or the like towrope somewhere, but I am sure its not rated at much. We live in a village and there was plenty of stuck cars during the floods last year, and occasionally you see someone stuck on a soft verge and the like.
I just want to replace the existing nancy tow rope with something thats "Disco spec" so in the event its needed I can trust its not going to break and be more of a danger than the original problem. It does not need to be rated at Disco up to the axels in mud thats for sure, 5T or so should do it.
Not sure I need to worry about on-road towing, no plans to do so and would likely get a fixed bar rather than a rope if I did, but just out of interest, how long should a strap/strop be to be "road legal length"?

4.5M, which is the information i got from Frogs when i got my first rope, but confirmed with a quick google search here - http://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/infor...px?sid=671
I also carry 4 strops, with relevant shackles - so i can extend out to some 15M with strops and about 12M with rope, if required....so far the 4.5M has been used in serious anger.

Thanks Slimer, I found a thread mentioning NSN last night as well but it was from 2006 so I did not PM him then.
Its all very confusing, just want something simple!
I think 4.5m (thanks Craig) strap (5T) and a pair of bow shackles (4.7T) should do the job, will have to call Frog or PM NSN as I think he does Black Rat stuff, not to worried what the label says, as long as its tested stamped and up to the job
Might be cheaper from NSN as postage seems to be heavy like the items to buy online...
