Cruise control - downhill?

My BMW brakes when speed is exceeded but its not radar cruise control so will run into the back of slower vehicles, they do two types one radar based and one that will maintain the speed using brakes if needed. I think one is active the other dynamic.

I assume that the Disco must be just either the radar based one or the very basic accelerator only which is a shame as I pock up ,y new Disco tomorrow .

I really like the BMW version without radar in speed limited areas as it will hold 30 or 40 but you are still in control of not crashing, I find the radar ones I've tried a bit odd as they react very late for me.

I've had CC with braking on last 3 cars. Audi A6, BMW 320 and Skoda Superb.

My D3 doesn't have it but my disco is older than my last three cars.

I thought the braking was fine on them. The Skoda had DSG and used the gears to slow as well as the brakes.

Surprised it isn't on a new D4 as standard.

Though a lot of a palava you can use the hill descent as a down hill cruise control and use the cruise buttons to increase or decrease the speed at which it was set. Good for long descents in the snow earlier in the year where the default speed was just too slow.

Going downhill in my D4 on German autobahn a couple of days ago at about 120km/h I touched the brakes slightly, and the gearbox shifted down one gear. This was not on cruise control.

I also have the feeling the car did Censored down on cruise control going down hill a few days earlier.

I currently have a TDV6 D3 which does over-run the speed set in the CC by up to about 8kph before kicking down (in sport setting). I believe that this is because of the auto gearbox. My wife's 2.0TDI Golf with its DSG gearbox is the only vehicle that I have driven which holds its speed downhill in CC to within 1 or 2 kph.

I find it a pain my D4 doesn't hold speed on CC downhill. All my BMWs have, even my Ford Edge Crossover in the US on hols last week did. Always considered it a standard function of CC until I owned a Land Rover...

dont know about urban myth, but if you can display current consumption you can see straight away whats happening.


On a down hill stretch If I go into neutral the engine is still getting fuel to keep it ticking over (stop it from stalling); but if I just come off the accelerator peddle the fuel flow is 0 and engine braking is in effect and its not speed dependent unless you are at slower than walking pace IE it keeps fuel flow to stop stalling.

so I can save fuel just by coming off the peddle, and still keep the same speed; but depending on the steepness of the hill I slip it down a gear if interested in keep the speed under control (slower cars in front Rolling with laughter )
 Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!

If you come of the pedal the car is still injecting fuel to maintain an idle speed.

if you leave it in gear all fuel is cut Wink

This can be seen with diagnostic equipment monitoring injector duration Smile

Yes it will show 99mpg or such, but its actually more economical to leave it in gear and use engine braking Smile
And its safer as well Thumbs Up

Wouldn't putting it into neutral then using the brakes ( and steering! ) have been the safer option? Noisy perhaps with the revving but getting the car stopped safely THEN turning it off? Just MHO Confused

I had a close call yesterday - Cruise set at 60 on straight road then started going downhill while talking to my son and not watching speedo when I noticed a Police car coming towards me slowing down and looking - glanced at speedo and had crept up to 65 so braked and saw them u turn in rear mirror Sad

He sat behind me for ages - thankfully he couldn't see my bright red neck due to the privacy glass - then he overtook, slowed down and put on blues then shot away into the distance like I was standing still Embarassed

My son passed his test recently and enjoyed every minute of my squirming Rolling Eyes

I have a clean licence and becoming paranoid with all the the 20, 40 and 50's especially on roads I don't know when I cant see any little lamp post reminders and people are on my bumper because they don't care what the limit is and never get caught Evil or Very Mad

currently on a road trip and mine too crept up from the set70 to 90 on a long slope. first time its happened.
 It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.
