My crank is no longer one piece

On a February evening, while joining the M25, the crank of our Disco 3 decided to no longer be one piece. After a delightful 12 hours of (somewhat questionable) recovery, we arrived home. The car then sat for until after lockdown, when it was decided that a new engine would be installed, as we knew the car well and the majority of things on it had been sorted during our 3 years of ownership. Following rejection from a few local garages (don't blame them) and a delightful £14k quote from Land Rover my dad kindly decided that I should carry out the work myself. As a second-year law student, one can see that I am clearly equipped with the skills necessary. Despite this, I have removed and fitted a new engine with the body on.

It's really rather tricky.

You're not supposed to have metal in here apparently

The first day

The removal, done with a few essentials such as an engine hoist and a John Deere 455

But it can be done, even by an idiot such as myself. Difficult things include the crossover mounts, gearbox cooler pipes, lowering the engine into place, and owning a Discovery 3.
After everything needed was swapped onto a reconditioned block, as well as a reluctor ring, which we installed incorrectly thanks to some instructions sent to us by a man who shall remain nameless, but should have known what he was doing. We, of course, found this out the hard way, and had to remove the gearbox on the floor after the engine was back in, and use the certified tool to install a new ring.

Oh the irony

However, after 2 months of work, and a lot of quiet walks in the garden to calm myself down, it finally farted into life yesterday.

This may be a rather pointless post, but hopefully it may encourage people to take the plunge if they are in a similar situation, as while quite difficult it can be achieved. Also none of my mates seem to appreciate the magnitude of what has been achieved on our driveway so I want some acknowledgement for that.

Thank you for reading, hopefully I've done this correctly.

I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Well done for your achievement, which can only really be appreciated by folks who have tried removing these heavy lumps of metal, working in awkward cramped spaces. Bow down

That I imagine is a huge task for the amateur mechanic given even the simplest task on a Discovery is usually much harder than it need be. Very well done.
