Cost increase on D5 over D4. |
|
While playing with the configurator for the Defender, I thought that I might see how much my last (very last of the line) D4 HSE Luxury has risen in price compared to the nearest equivalent new D5.
A lot of the equipment that was once standard had been relegated to the cost option list, while the standard fit RSE has now disappeared altogether. Moving production to a low cost country might have helped too.
The cost increase, once everything but the RSE had been put back? 33%.
The equivalent cost increase on the Fatty, putting once standard items back and adjusted to the same time period, is 19%.
I realise that cars, in general, have increased in price pretty savagely over the last 3 years, with probably a lot more to come over the next 3 years, but this is still a surprise. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!

I'd like to see the spec list side by side 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

What sort of thing would you be looking out for to compare? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I’ve not got access to L322 pricing and specs to do that comparison. Have you? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

One would assume it’ll go the way of the dodo and in-flight entertainment... people use tablets.

Not sure what D5 HSE Lux RM is looking at as RSE is standard
Quote:The standard Rear Seat Entertainment System provides two 8" screens built in to the rear of the front headrests. The system comes with two pairs of WhiteFire® digital wireless headphones and HDMI, Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) and USB connections

I’ll probably have a brochure somewhere. I’ve still got my D3 brochure, from the days when you could get a Disco sub £30k 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Yes, you’re right there. I stand corrected 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Huh? I’ve gone from a 2015 D4 HSE Lux to an MY20 D5 HSE Lux. The spec of the D5 is far higher than that of the D4 without going anywhere near the options list.
The only thing the D5 is missing as standard is the FBH but the remote climate will just start the engine and will now cool the car in summer. The D4 didn’t have:
Cooled front seats
Adaptive cruise
Lane keep assist
Adaptive speed limiter
Auto high beam (was an option on the D4, standard D5)
Internet (pointless, yes)
Full control with the LR app
Remote seat fold (slightly pointless)
Reclining rear seats
A petrol engine!
Probably a load of other things.....
I paid £61k brand new with discount. The D4 HSE Lux got about as low as £52k with discount so it’s been about 20% increase Over the space of five years - not horrendous. There are pros and cons to both the 4 and 5 as has been discussed to death, in my opinion the D5 is the better car (and so it should be after 15 years of technological advancement). That the D4 can still be considered to be almost as good as a D5 goes to show how good the D4 actually was!
