Consistant shuddering after drive shaft removed

My front driverside driveshaft went on me the other day driving home (disco 3 TDV6 automatic) I had to remove it completely and rely on the rear wheel drive to get me home. there was a consistand shuddering about once per second but only when accelerating. when I took the foot of the throttle it went away. My Thought (hopes) are that this is the traction control trying to send power to the other wheel but I'm conserned it might be something more serious. Any thought on this? might I have destroyed the gearbox or transfer box?

The cadence of the shuddering appears to coincide with the speed/rpm. in second gear as I accelorated the cadence seemed to increase but wasnt exactly linear with speed as in i didnt seem to be twice as often as my speed doubled.

has anyone had to do this before to get home and what happened?

It really shouldn't have been driven with a shaft missing as the front diff would have been under considerable pressure constantly looking to balance the output speeds. Traction control as well as ABS would also been out of whack.

All you can do now is to put another shaft in it and see how things are then. Hopefully you got away with it!

I am guessing if the shaft is removed, there is also going to be very little oil in the diff too... ?

The centre diff would have to lock up to drive the rear end on its own so that will have had a hard time as well .

No I split the shaft and left the inner part attached to the diff

The abs will be thinking the wheel you have removed the shaft from is spinning and will apply the traction control (ABS) on that wheel as there is no resistance particularly when starting off or accelerating, hence the thumping as the brake on that wheel is rapidly applied on and off, definitely not an recommended procedure. I’m surprised you could move at all.

Looks like i dodged a bullet. Put the new driveshaft in today and she's driving perfectly. but given the comment's here I think i'd get it towed if it ever happens again.

Change the diff oils and the transfer box oil.

The offside or drivers side does not have a brake pad sensor, that is the one that has been working hard and will be worn more than the nearside and consequently will wear out first.
If you travelled any sort of milage I would be checking/changing the pads on that side as you will be given no warning when it's running metal to metal and ruining the brake disc.

brakepads were new from couple weeks ago. Definitely a bit more wear on the driverside one but only around 1mm difference.

Surely op can just swap the more worn pads over to the sensor side ??
