The D4 back may be squarere but the D5 with the seats down seems longer and as such you may still be able to get the sofas in the back
May be worth having a longer test drive and try a sofa in the back MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Whilst there may not be much difference in interior space, the D5 may even bigger, there’s a big difference in the height and also the width of the actual boot aperture. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

3 days is a pretty fair try 👍
Wishful thinking is all very positive, but neither the FF or the D5 can come close to the original D4 for extreme load carrying duties (large and square door aperture / slim and vertical D pillars / low loading height / loading friendly tailgate / properly folding rear seats / ultra tall load bay).
I like the positives of the FF, but have to accept that for extreme load carrying I just need to hitch up a 1900 litre compact trailer. Come to think of it, the FF with a light trailer is even more practical than the D4 was without one! Just a thought there for those shifting furniture (much less likely to damage the car, or the furniture and for business use, it’s all tax deductible ) 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

We have had over a months worth of extended test driving in the D5 desperately trying to convince ourselves it would work and two cancelled orders for one. I still keep looking at them but would have to keep the D4 for load carrying and family trips which whilst possible would just be bonkers. The current D4 was suppose to be a stop gap for a year until the D5 and I swore I would never run one outside warranty yet September looms when I face that possibility.
Good luck with the D5 I'm sure it will be great, I'm eagerly awaiting to see what the new Defenders rear end looks like ! MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

I’ve done the same thing myself, where I’ve really liked a car and gone back to look at the replacement time and time again in the hope that I misjudged it the first time - longing for it to be as good as what went before
After 3 Citroen XM estates, I really wanted the C5 estate to be as good. It was hateful, as I found out over the year that I put up with the pile of poo
I moved on to Phase 2 Volvo V70’s and had 3 of those then, with the Phase 3 launched, I didn’t make the same mistake again and knew it was time to move on to something better; that’s where the first FL2 arrived.
It’s vital to judge a new car on its own merits and not be clouded by what went before. For some, the 5 will be good enough, but taking a total of a month’s test drives and still not being convinced is exactly how I made the mistake with the C5! 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I have a problem in understanding you as far as you own rather recent D4's...
My car is a 2006 D3 and fulfulling all my wishes, exept for the "CO2-MOB" that ru(i)ns our country,
and increases my roadtax with 15% as of 2019 as I don't have a DPF...
Its not that it will go up with € 50 like it would be in the UK 15% of GBP300 or so..
Here I will be paying per year then € 3500,- in roadtax...
My only remedy is to take the car across the border and cancel the roadtax in the Netherlands,
as I only have to pay here if I am on the road...
But at the same time, the reason that I've bought the car for in 2010 have changed : kids don't
come along on holidays, so mainly alone with SWMO, no horse moving or heavy transport needed
anymore. Easy answer : sell it.. But its worthless here, maybe I'll get € 8000,- for it while I
invested that amount in repairs the last two years..
But at the same time some demo's D5's have surfaced and they are pretty well priced...
But I can't really defend the outlay of cash for a D5 given we don't really need it....
My only "ace" in my sleeve is that SWMO wants airsuspension only..
Thats the same dilemma as you guys have, from another perspective..
Any idea's ?

That’s interesting.
Wouid a D5 (with air) cure your road tax problem? 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

@Red Merle.
Well the D5 has a DPF and it is leighter, so my roadtax will be € 2400 pa then..
An enormous amount of money, given I maybe drive 8000km in the Netherlands
with it. With the new F-Type, I might only drive 4000km pa in NL..
I am thinking of switching to a saloon, XF petrol of 2011 or so, as then roadtax
would be € 911,- . Consumption is higher, but not impressive with 5000km..

That road tax is shocking!
The last generation XF is a really nice car and would be my choice if I had to get back in a conventional car. A friend’s bought a 2013 XF Sportbrake about 6 months ago and he absolutely loves his 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I think the comparison should be made from D2 to D3 rather than D3 to D4 when comparing the 'upgrade' to a D5.
I remember my first drive of a D3 back in 2004, it was such a massive leap from the D2, that I knew before I'd even driven it off the forecourt on the test drive I'd buy one.
I just didn't notice that leap from a D4 to D5.
Nice place to be but the massive price hike means you've really got to love it, and I just don't love it enough I'm afraid.
When I finally convince SWMBO that we don't need seven seats anymore it will be a petrol RR Sport for us next Discovery 4 HSE

I just find RR Sport aesthetically pleasing to the eye compared to the D5 and a lot easier on the wallet compared to a FFRR Discovery 4 HSE

Couldn't you purchase an extended warranty? Had one on my current Freelander 2 up to the point where they wouldn't cover me any more (100k miles).
I had some airbag and door solenoid issues and they were all fixed by a main stealer.
Also had my rear shock absorbers replaced under warranty by my local indie who has serviced all my Land Rovers I've had over the years.
I'm in the process of moving over to a D4. Mine will be a couple of years old and the plan is for that to last and hopefully the new Defender may have something in the range to replace the D4 when I'm ready. That's if the new Defender ever materialises!!!
Good luck in resolving your dilemma. Like a previous poster has said, a lot of D3/D4 owners are facing the same one
