Compressor Rebuild: replacing exhaust valve

Hi all

After having had a new (used) Hitachi compressor fitted to my LR3, I would like to try and rebuild my old one to have on hand as a spare. I was informed that the old one had a fault with the exhaust valve which I subsequently learned was a relatively inexpensive part to replace, compared to the whole compressor.

Anyway, I’m having no luck removing the aluminium plug that holds the exhaust valve in place. I’ve tried various size sockets starting at 17mm, ratchet handle, impact gun, I even tried holding the head of the bolt in the vice and turn the compressor housing. Finally, when the soft alloy bolt head began to get destroyed from the abuse I tried jarring it loose with a hammer and punch. The Censored still wouldn’t budge! It seems to be either held in with loctite or the alloys have ‘grown’ together?

The head is now starting to break up, and I know that it will shear off if I put any more force on it.
What’s the next step? Has anyone had success with drilling it out and tapping the thread? Other suggestions?

Cheers

I did the same and actually wrecked the top - it is all corrosion related.

Tapping the compressor may fix the actual valve not sealing but not the hex head - it will need drilling out and retapping and putting a new hex head in. In my case my bashing the compressor around removed whatever was stopping the valve from sealing but because I had ripped the hex head off the housing it was leaking air - filled with super glue and works fine but one day I will have to drill mine and replace.

Look at my posts on the RRS site http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/post576675.html#576675 look from 07 Mar 19 on.

Spot on, thanks Garry. I dont suppose you can recall what size tap is required to tidy the threads up with once the plug was drilled out?

Sorry cannot help with that at the moment as I have not done mine as the superglue is sealing mine still. I am away from home at the moment so cannot measure the replacement cap thread.

Buy the kit with the cap and measure it.

Good luck
