Compressor intermittent fail (when cold)

On behalf of my brother:

Car intermittently coming up with message “only normal height available” so suspect drier or compressor has a fault. Only seems to happen when it’s cold though.

No extended warranty and dealer is asking £1200 to change compressor. Anything else to try first? Anywhere cheaper?

Hi

I am DiscoStu's brother and it is my D4 with the issue.

The car is only just out of warranty at 3.5 years old.

The fault can't be anything too serious at the moment as it is only doing it occasionally and clears pretty much straight away. It only seems to do it when the temperature is around freezing and the car is cold. (I suspect the drier is at fault rather than the compressor itself!?!?)

Dealer tells me the error codes are C1A20-64 and U0421-68 - Can anyone tell me specifically what these codes mean?

Not spending £1,200 on it when currently I can turn the engine off and back on and the error is gone.

Thanks

My 2013 D4 does this when really cold and parked bum into wind.
Just fine when not cold, returns to normal after switch off and back on after first run with warning lights when it happens.
Done it twice in two years.

Mines doing it on average once or twice a week over the last 10 or so weeks... but as I say when the temp is cold... it is garaged overnight so protected from the worst of the weather...

Assuming the issue will gradually get more frequent, but maybe it won't...

When you get the fault, go and listen close to left hand rear wheel arch where it's located for a buzzing noise as it operates. You can take the plastic cover guard from over the compressor and view the compressor itself. If it doesn't seem to be working, disconnect the 12V supply connector and apply a separate 12V to the compressor. If it's working and you suspect ice in the lines and the dryer, you can purchase the dessicant separately, or a full repair kit that contains filters and dessicant for about £60.

Could it be related to battery / alternator?

I had the normal height only message coming up when I changed car height, heated seats and cold!

The fault code was reservoir filling too slowly, so garage replaced compressor under warranty. Shortly after, the alternator packed up.

After both had happened, I did question if the alternator was on the way out before, and wasn’t outputting enough power to run all the electrics at the same time, and the compressor was the first thing to be changed as it had a fault code due to the slow fill.

Just a though, may have been coincidence!!
